Monte Hellman (1929-2021) was an American film director, producer, writer, editor and photographer. He was mentored by Roger Corman who also produced several of his early films. Hellman's most critically acclaimed film is considered to be Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) starring James Taylor and Beach Boys drummer, Dennis Wilson. Hellman directed Jack Nicholson in four films in the mid-1960s - Flight to Fury, Back Door to Hell, and the two acid westerns, Ride in the Whirlwind and The Shooting. Nicholson wrote the screenplays for Flight to Fury and Ride in the Whirlwind and co-produced The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind with Hellman.
