Chromogenic print Signed, dated, and numbered, verso 20 x 24 inches (Edition of 9) 30 x 40 inches (Edition of 5) This photograph is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. At the age of eighteen, Israeli girls enter a two-year period in which they will be transformed from girls to women under the Israeli Defense Forces, a rigorous institution where individuality comes second to nationalism. Rather than portraying the soldier as heroic, confident, or proud, Rachel Papo’s series, "Serial No. 3817131," reveals the soldier and the teenage girl in constant negotiation, caught between two extremes: a soldier who lives on an army base with hundreds just like her, and an individual who wishes to be noticed. Papo, who was assigned serial no. 3817131 during her service in the Israeli Air Force, considers these photographs a bridge between past and present – each is a portrait that explores the complex range of emotions inherent in all adolescents, showing the vulnerable side of each soldier. Rachel Papo was born in 1970 in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Israel. She began photographing as a teenager and attended a renowned fine arts high school in Haifa. She earned a BFA in Fine Arts from Ohio State University (1991-1996), and an MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City (2002-2005). Papo's photographs are included in numerous public and private collections, and have been exhibited and published worldwide. She currently lives in Berlin working on personal projects, as well as accepting commissioned projects. Her first book, "Serial No. 3817131," was published by powerHouse Books in 2008. She was selected as a finalist for the “Santa Fe Prize for Photography,” and was been awarded a NYFA Fellowship in 2006. In 2009 Rachel won a Lucie Award for “Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year.”
