About the Item
The Gathering is a photography by the Zimbabwean artist Tamary Kudita from the series African Victorian. Prints are available in two different dimensions:
* 20.8 x 33 inches (53 × 84 cm), edition of 20
* 29.9 x 46.8 (76 × 119 cm), edition of 20
The indicated dimensions are those of the image, which will be printed on paper with an additional 3 cm of white margins.
This photography shows a group of women gathered in front of a rural Zimbabwean house. One of them is seated in front of the others, and all are dressed in elegant black satin gowns. The artist explains the symbolic importance of these dresses: “The black satin fabric symbolizes being regal, and the dresses serve as metaphorical curtains that have obscured African narratives by discarding them.”
African Victorian is the artist’s first series, in which she combined elements of African culture and Victorian aesthetics in a surprising way. The photographer worked with a local designer to create Victorian-style dresses using African fabrics. In doing so, Tamary Kudita appropriated a Western visual canon and recontextualized it in an African environment. These opulent, magnificent clothes “illuminate once invisible bodies by making them hyper visible”. The series conveys an image of the assertive, independent African woman, anchored in her cultural roots.
