About the Item
Vessel is a photography by the Zimbabwean artist Tamary Kudita from the series African Victorian. Prints are available in two different dimensions:
* 33 x 25.2 inches (84 × 64 cm), edition of 20
* 46.8 x 35.8 (119 × 91 cm), edition of 20
The indicated dimensions are those of the image, which will be printed on paper with an additional 3 cm of white margins.
This photography was inspired by the book The Lady with the Ship on Her Head by Deborah Nourse Lattimore. The photographer used the boat as a headdress to symbolize the journey of life, as well as the migrations that have marked the history certain people.
African Victorian is the artist’s first series, in which she combined elements of African culture and Victorian aesthetics in a surprising way. The photographer worked with a local designer to create Victorian-style dresses using African fabrics. In doing so, Tamary Kudita appropriated a Western visual canon and recontextualized it in an African environment. These opulent, magnificent clothes “illuminate once invisible bodies by making them hyper visible”. The series conveys an image of the assertive, independent African woman, anchored in her cultural roots.
