About the Item

100 x 150cm (40 x 60 inches) Edition of 4 Can not be shipped to France Emerging far from the spectacle of Rio’s Sambodrome, Bate Bola by French artist Vincent Rosenblatt reveals a parallel carnival rooted in the suburbs and favelas, where excess, invention, and ritual converge. These masked figures, simultaneously playful and unsettling, transform the streets into a stage of collective performance, driven not by samba but by the raw pulse of Funk Carioca. Their handmade costumes, lavish in color, volume, and scent, blur boundaries between masculinity and femininity, fantasy and threat, devotion and rebellion. Both celebration and resistance, the Bate Bola phenomenon embodies an uncompromising desire for visibility and belonging. Often ignored by official narratives, it persists as a powerful act of communal identity, where art becomes a shared investment and a rare truce within a fractured city. This work captures that fleeting intensity: a carnival on the margins, radiant, fragile, and defiantly alive.

Tutu - Leading Contemporary Cuban Photographer René Peña
By Rene Peña
Located in Brooklyn, NY
René Peña (Rene de Jesus Pena Gonzalez) is a self-taught photographer born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. His photography is characterized by stark contrasts, between black and white, subject and background, subject and object. His work often focuses on the duality between human inability to escape institutionalization and human desire for individualism. His interest in contrast is also reflected in his place of residence: Peña currently inhabits the Cerro neighborhood of Cuba which is home to a mostly poor African-Caribbean population, despite having been an enclave of Havana's richest families in the 19th century. René Peña graduated from the Higher pedagogic Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Havana with a specialization in English in 1983. In the late 1980s he entered the national world of photography and since 1990 became leader of the new trends of Cuban photography...
