F23 is a stunning 24" x 24" Lightjet Print on Metallic Paper, available in this size in a Limited Edition of 15.
The vibrant coral and orange blooms of the Nerines at Exbury against a midnight-black backdrop.
In this photograph, the Nerines dominate against a wreath of verdant leaves and stems. The bright green stems twist and writhe around each other, providing a stable and verdant bed for the coral Nerines to rest on.
Creagh uses an approach redolent of Synthetic Cubism to describe the vivid color and texture of the Exbury Nerines. She marries both the natural and organic beauty of nature with its heavily stylised appearance in formal photography.
Combining a highly technical practice-based and digital methodology, Lisa Creagh reveals the beauty of this flower and emphasises its characteristic petals through the light-hand of digital manipulation.
In this project, commissioned by Lionel de Rothschild, Lisa Creagh plays the role of botanical documenter, capturing the fascinating and diverse forms of the Exbury Nerines.
The nerines collection is iconic to Exbury, an estate garden open to the public in the South-West of England. Started by Lionel de Rothschild's grandfather between the First and Second World Wars, they are hybrids of the Nerine Sarniensis, also called the Guernsey Lily or Raquel.
Creagh established a small studio on the Exbury estate, and performed a daily survey in the greenhouses to identify which flowers had bloomed overnight. The result is as a magnificent array of color and texture as one could imagine. In Creagh's own words:
"Every day was a dose of color therapy as I walked between rows of abundant blooms."
Drawing on Creagh's previous 'Floriculture' series, F24 also draws on the theme of The Instant Garden, which derived from an ancient Persian practice of throwing a rich, floral carpet to the ground.
Combining the traditional handmade elements of crafts like needlework with the contemporary techniques of digital manipulation, 'Floriculture' plays with the ideas of control and stylised appearance that have featured in conversations of nature for years.
