Raphael Gleitsmann
(1910-1995)
Raphael Gleitsmann, born in 1910, spent most of his life in Akron, Ohio. He was a self-taught artist whose only "formal" training came from Miss Calvin at Central High School and Paul Travis at the Cleveland School of Art. Although he favored oil painting, he also worked in watercolor, photography and other media. The artist's earlier works were idealized presentations of life in Middle America during the Great Depression in the realistic style.
Gleitsmann served as a combat engineer in World War II from 1943-1945. While in Europe he created quaint sketches that also recorded the devastation caused by the war. He was wounded at the Rhine River, received the Purple Heart and returned to Akron. Everything he saw and experienced at war abroad affected his art. Although he initially returned to painting in his signature realistic manner, he quickly began to grow into a more abstracted, expressionistic style, based on imagination and memory, which focused on post-Apocalyptic imagery such as ruins and cemeteries. "The war experience put something into the work that it had never had before-a greater awareness of such things as the attrition of time . . . what happened to us," said Gleitsmann in a 1982 interview. "It's something deep in the experience that does shift focus around, and you are different and often better."
Gleitsmann received national recognition for these works when he received first prize in a 1948 Carnegie Institute exhibition of international contemporary painting beating out Andrew Wyeth. These war-inspired paintings may also have led him to end his career as an artist around 1954. Gleitsmann may have wished to put the horrors of war behind him "it's something like having a belief-believing that what you're doing is of importance . . . when you lose the belief, it seems there's no return . . . mostly I just found I really had nothing to say anymore," said Gleitsmann. After Gleitsmann retired from painting, he first tried framing and then focused on restoration work on oil paintings and works of paper. The artist passed away in 1995.

William Bailey, Modernist Figurative Painter, Dies at 89
He swathed his nudes and still lifes of eggs, vases, bottles and bowls in a breathless, deceptively serene atmosphere heavy with mystery.

William Bailey, whose pristine, idealized still lifes and female nudes made him one of the leading figures in the return of figurative art in the 1980s, died on April 13 at his home in Branford, Conn. He was 89.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Alix Bailey.
Beyond his painting, Mr. Bailey influenced generations of students in his many years as a teacher at the Yale School of Art.
In some of his best-known work, Mr. Bailey arranged simple objects — the eggs, bowls, bottles and vases that he once called “my repertory company” — along a severe horizontal shelf, or on a plain table, swathing them in a breathless, deceptively serene atmosphere heavy with mystery.
His muted ochres, grays and powdery blues conjured up a still, timeless world inhabited by Platonic forms, recognizable but uncanny, in part because he painted from imagination rather than
“They are at once vividly real and objects in dream, and it is the poetry of this double life that elevates all this humble crockery to the realm of pictorial romance,” Hilton Kramer wrote in The New York Times in 1979.
Mr. Bailey’s female figures, some clothed in a simple shift or robe and others partly or entirely nude, are disconcertingly impassive, implacable and unreadable, fleshly presences breathing an otherworldly air.
The critic Mark Stevens, writing in Newsweek in 1982, credited Mr. Bailey with helping to “restore representational art to a position of consequence in modern painting.”
But his version of representation was entirely idiosyncratic, seemingly traditional but in fact “a modernism so contrarian,” the artist Alexi Worth wrote in a catalog essay for the Betty Cuningham Gallery in 2010, “that it feels, despite its historical sophistication, almost like a brand of outsider art.”

Still Life with with Bottle, Paintbrushes, and Book in Oil on Paper
Bright still life by Louise L. Apthorp (American, 1878-1963). A wine bottle, vase full of brushes, pear, and large book sit on a table. The book is "Verve. The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature (1937-1960)". The tablecloth is bright, with a multicolor checker pattern, affixed to the wall to create a backdrop. The squares of color and folds in the cloth create the impression of cubism, even though the subject is not cubist.
Signed "Apthorp" in the lower left corner.
Shipped in a plastic frame for protection.
Louise L. Apthorp (American, 1878-1963) was born in 1878 in New Jersey and lived in Massachusetts. In the mid-1940s, she moved to Monterey, CA. She was listed in “Who Was Who in American Art” (1985, 1999), “Dictionary of Woman Artists” (1985), and “Mallet’s Index of Artists” (1935).
