Lawrence Reginald Alloway was an English art critic and curator who worked in the United States from 1961. In the 1950s, he was a leading member of the Independent Group in the UK and in the 1960s was an influential writer and curator in the US. He first used the term "mass popular art" in the mid-1950s and used the term "Pop Art" in the 1960s to indicate that art has a basis in the popular culture of its day and takes from it a faith in the power of images. Alloway started writing reviews for the British periodical ArtReview, then styled Art News and Review in 1949 and for the American periodical Art News in 1953. In Nine Abstract Artists (1954) he promoted the Constructivist artists that emerged in Britain after the Second World War: Robert Adams, Terry Frost, Adrian Heath, Anthony Hill, Roger Hilton, Kenneth Martin, Mary Martin, Victor Pasmore, and William Scott. Edward Jean Steichen (March 27, 1879 – March 25, 1973) was a Luxembourgish American photographer, painter, and art gallery and museum curator. Steichen's were the photographs that most frequently appeared in Alfred Stieglitz's groundbreaking magazine Camera Work during its publication from 1903 to 1917. Together Stieglitz and Steichen opened the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, which eventually became known as '291', after its address. Steichen laid claim to his photos of gowns for the magazine Art et Décoration in 1911 being the first modern fashion photographs ever published. From 1923 to 1938, Steichen was a photographer for the Condé Nast magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair while also working for many advertising agencies including J. Walter Thompson. During these years, Steichen was regarded as the best known and highest paid photographer in the world. In 1944, he directed the war documentary The Fighting Lady, which won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary. From 1947 to 1961, Steichen served as Director of the Department of Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art. While at MoMA, he curated and assembled exhibits including The Family of Man, which was seen by nine million people. In 1904, Steichen began experimenting with color photography. He was one of the earliest in the United States to use the Autochrome Lumière process. In 1905, Stieglitz and Steichen created the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, which eventually became known as 291 after its address. It presented some of the first American exhibitions of Henri Matisse, Auguste Rodin, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Constantin Brâncuși. Born in Scotland of a Hungarian physicist/inventor and an English art dealer, she grew up in an international environment. Her father encouraged original thinking and experimentation; her mother nourished her creativity and her intuitive skills. Leaving her home in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, for Munich, Germany, she apprenticed to Bauhaus photographer Frl. Berthe Himmler. The next step was New York City where Hatay began to freelance in all aspects of photography. It was when she photographed Jimi Hendrix at Madison Square Garden on May 18, 1969 and was inspired by his music that she got a chance to spread her wings artistically. She was initially inspired by his energy, his vision and his originality. "Jimi Hendrix was absolutely amazing - it is not possible to put words to the Experience. He was, and still is, unique. I didn't know at the time I photographed him that he was interested in his music being a healing power. I learned a lot about this aspect of Hendrix about ten years later when I met people who knew him. When they heard how much I was interested in the healing aspects of his music, they shared their stories with me. I used some of this information in my two books, Jimi Hendrix, The Spirit Lives On and Jimi Hendrix, Reflections and Visions". Nona's experimental techniques were used in her photographs on many other Rock stars, such as Tina Turner, James Brown, and Frank Zappa. She had a major exhibit of her work in Paris. Diane Arbus (1923-1971) is one of the most influential and daring photographers of the 20th century. Arbus is best known for her unique form of documentary portraiture. She explored the uncanny, the marginalized, and the idiosyncratic characters who defied mid-century conformity. Her work has influenced some of the most renowned photographers of our time including Nan Goldin. While her career launched in the fashion world, it was years after quitting commercial photography (circa 1956) that she found her voice as an artist. With camera in hand, she followed her fascination with the eccentric individuals and oddities of New York City. Ultimately rejecting her affluent, sheltered upbringing and the mainstream fashion industry to create her own definitions of beauty. Arbus’ portraits were considered incredibly provocative for their bold representations of sexuality, chaos, and grit. She fully immersed herself within the queer and alternative communities she documented, engaged with a curious balance of mystery and homage. Shot in 1966, "Groom Kissing His Bride" is a prime example of her uncanny ability to capture even the most traditional moments (a wedding) through a lens of surrealism. Love and tension confront each other as the groom kisses the bride with an attacking passion. Her likeness disappears behind his embrace and their newlywed bodies merge together. This work also contains Arbus’ visual trademarks – a black and white palette, a square crop, and a hard flash that flattens the aesthetic wonderland of New York. Today, Arbus' work is celebrated in many major museum collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Institute of Chicago, National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo), and Centre Pompidou (Paris). Evelyn Lauder (née Hausner; August 12, 1936 – November 12, 2011) was an Austrian American businesswoman, socialite and philanthropist who has been credited as one of the creators and promoters of the pink ribbon as a symbol for awareness of breast cancer. Lauder, an avid photographer, had a home in Colorado and a penthouse on Fifth Avenue lined with modern art. She was born Evelyn Hausner in 1936 in Vienna, Austria, to a Jewish family. Lauder’s family fled Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938, using their household silver to get visas to Belgium. They then moved on to England where her mother was sent to an internment camp on the Isle of Man and Evelyn was placed in a nursery. The family arrived in New York City in 1940. Lauder would later recall that she was asleep when the ship bringing them to the United States arrived in New York Harbor and her mother woke her up to see the Statue of Liberty During the war years her father worked as a diamond cutter; then the family opened the first of what became a chain of five dress shops in Manhattan. She graduated from Hunter College High School in 1954. She then attended Hunter College, part of the City University of New York, where she studied Psychology and Anthropology and also where she met her future husband, Leonard Lauder, then a trainee naval officer, on a blind date. She graduated from Hunter College in 1958. The couple were married on July 5, 1959. After the marriage, she worked for several years as a public school teacher in Harlem before leaving to work with her husband at the company founded in 1946 by her mother-in-law, Estée Lauder, which at the time sold six products: a red lipstick, creams, lotions, and Youth Dew fragrance in a bath oil...

Born and raised in New York City, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he studied privately with Harry Callahan. Jones is President of the Josef and Yaye Breitenbach Foundation originating twenty-eight one-person exhibitions and ten books. He has served as a member of the Board of Fellows at The Center For Creative Photography. Jones is also a former consultant to The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Aperture and the Estate of Paul Strand. In 2004, Nazraeli Press published Sweep Out Cottage, a compilation of photographs made in and around a house known as the Four Winds in Little Compton, Rhode Island. He has showed at KMR Arts Gallery and at Bonni Benrubi Gallery. His photos are in many private and public collections. A Rising Tide of Silence was Jones’s first documentary production. The film explores the life and international influence of Father Thomas Keating who introduced Centering Prayer to a wide western audience. A Rising Tide of Silence premiered at the 2013 Aspen Film Festival and won the Audience Choice Award. Peter Jones has spoken at numerous screenings most recently at Harvard and at the Dalai Lama's Center For Ethics at MIT.Jones is the author of The Changing Face of America (Prentice Hall Press) and the co-author of three other books including Social Gardens (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). This is a vintage black and white photograph (shot in 1961 and printed in 1975) of famed actor Gary Cooper by internationally renowned PhotographerSherman Weisburd. Hatay is a visual artist, a healer and a former Rock and Roll photojournalist. Born in Scotland of a Hungarian physicist/inventor and an English art dealer, she grew up in an international environment. Her father encouraged original thinking and experimentation; her mother nourished her creativity and her intuitive skills. Leaving her home in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, for Munich, Germany, she apprenticed to Bauhaus photographer Frl. Berthe Himmler. The next step was New York City where Hatay began to freelance in all aspects of photography. It was when she photographed Jimi Hendrix at Madison Square Garden on May 18, 1969 and was inspired by his music that she got a chance to spread her wings artistically. She was initially inspired by his energy, his vision and his originality. "Jimi Hendrix was absolutely amazing - it is not possible to put words to the Experience. He was, and still is, unique. I didn't know at the time I photographed him that he was interested in his music being a healing power. I learned a lot about this aspect of Hendrix about ten years later when I met people who knew him. When they heard how much I was interested in the healing aspects of his music, they shared their stories with me. I used some of this information in my two books, Jimi Hendrix, The Spirit Lives On and Jimi Hendrix, Reflections and Visions". Nona's experimental techniques were used in her photographs on many other Rock stars, such as Tina Turner, James Brown, and Frank Zappa. She had a major exhibit of her work in Paris.
