About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Andre Masson (1896–1987), titled Le depart (The Departure), originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This dynamic and lyrical composition exemplifies Masson’s mastery of spontaneous form and symbolic energy. Le depart captures the tension and motion between abstraction and figuration, where lines, gestures, and color converge into a rhythmic expression of movement and transformation. Through his intuitive approach and psychological depth, Masson reveals the creative force of the subconscious, transforming instinct into structure and chaos into harmony. Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaboration with leading modern artists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Andre Masson (1896–1987) Title: Le depart (The Departure), 1972 Medium: Lithograph on velin d’Arches paper Dimensions: 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1972 Publisher: Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, 1972 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers. About the Publication: Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, stands as one of the most distinguished collaborative albums of the postwar era. Bringing together original lithographs by some of the foremost artists of the 20th century, the portfolio celebrates artistic friendship, collaboration, and the enduring spirit of creative dialogue. Le depart (The Departure) by Andre Masson exemplifies this spirit, uniting Surrealist automatism with a lyrical exploration of movement and emotion. Printed at the renowned Atelier Mourlot, the work reflects the technical and artistic brilliance that defined mid-century French printmaking. About the Artist: Andre Masson (1896–1987) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printmaker whose revolutionary exploration of automatism, abstraction, and the subconscious made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century modernism. Born in Balagny-sur-Therain, France, and educated at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Masson developed a deep respect for classical structure while embracing the avant-garde spirit that defined interwar Europe. A leading member of the Surrealist movement founded by Andre Breton, Masson pioneered automatic drawing—an intuitive process that sought to bypass conscious control and reveal the raw power of the subconscious. His approach aligned him with artistic visionaries such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose collective innovations redefined the boundaries of modern art. Masson’s compositions, characterized by fluid lines, organic forms, and symbolic energy, bridged the realms of dream and reality, chaos and order, giving visual form to the emotional and psychological depths of human experience. His early works from the 1920s and 1930s captured both sensuality and violence through abstract imagery that prefigured the gestural dynamism of postwar Abstract Expressionism, profoundly influencing artists such as Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, and Willem de Kooning. Exiled to the United States during World War II, Masson became a vital conduit between European Surrealism and the emerging New York School, introducing American artists to the liberating concepts of automatism and subconscious creation. His later paintings evolved toward lyrical abstraction, blending natural rhythms, mythological imagery, and cosmic harmony in compositions that celebrated the interconnectedness of life. A close friend of Picasso, Dali, and Miro, Masson shared their belief in the transformative power of imagination, merging classical intellect with spontaneous energy. His works were exhibited internationally and are held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Revered for his ability to unite emotional freedom with intellectual rigor, Masson remains a cornerstone of modern art history, standing alongside Picasso, Calder, Giacometti, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray as one of the great innovators who shaped the visual language of the 20th century. His highest auction record was achieved by Massacre (1931), which sold for $9.1 million at Christie’s, Paris, on October 20, 2022, reaffirming his enduring legacy as one of the most visionary, influential, and collectible artists of the modern era.
