About the Item

ANDRÉ MASSON – "LA JAMBE DÉGUISÉE" ⚜ Etching with Aquatint ⚜ Hand Signed Lower Right ⚜ Numbered 23/50 ⚜ Conservation Frame SURREAL FIGURATION AND AUTOMATIC LINE Created in 1975, La jambe déguisée (“The Disguised Leg”) distills Masson’s lifelong themes of metamorphosis, erotic energy, and dream logic. A central “leg” form anchors the composition while surrounding shapes morph between body and beast: a dove-like profile, an octopus-like creature, and mask- or star-shaped facets that fracture the figure’s identity. The crisp, automatic cross-hatching of the etching is softened by washes of aquatint in sky blue, citron, and rose, producing the sensation of forms surfacing and dissolving—classic Masson. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Signature 1970s etching with aquatint by a principal Surrealist innovator ✓ Hand signed and numbered 23/50 — scarce edition with vibrant color passages ✓ Strong subject: erotic metamorphosis and masked identity, central to Masson’s oeuvre ✓ Accompanied by 1990 Wolf Schulz Gallery (San Francisco) receipt; professionally framed and ready to hang ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: "La jambe déguisée" ▸ Artist: André Masson ▸ Medium: Etching with Aquatint ▸ Creation Date: 1975 ▸ Country of Creation: France ▸ Signature: Hand signed lower right; numbered lower left ▸ Edition: 23/50 ▸ Documentation: Receipt from Wolf Schulz Gallery (San Francisco, 1990), purchase price $2,800 ▸ Provenance: Private Collection ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Image Area: 10.75 x 8 inches — ◼︎ Paper Size: 18 x 13.75 inches — ◻︎ Frame Size: 26.125 x 23.375 x 2.25 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent condition. INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document ✓ Copy of Wolf Schulz Gallery receipt (1990) THE ARTIST: André Masson (1896–1987) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printmaker recognized as one of the most influential figures of Surrealism and later a vital link to Abstract Expressionism. Trained in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, Masson developed his signature technique of automatic drawing, allowing unconscious imagery to emerge freely. This approach shaped the visual language of Surrealism alongside contemporaries such as André Breton, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dalí. Masson’s work often explores metamorphosis, mythology, violence, and eroticism, blending human and animal forms into dreamlike hybrids. His imagery — at once sensual and unsettling — profoundly influenced artists of the postwar era, including Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, and the New York School, who looked to his gestural freedom as a precursor to action painting. His paintings, drawings, and prints are represented in major international collections such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Art Institute of Chicago. Collectors continue to prize Masson’s graphic works — especially his etchings and aquatints of the 1960s–70s — for their ability to distill his Surrealist imagination into concise, technically brilliant compositions.
