About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Andre Masson (1896–1987), titled Sans titre (Untitled), originates from the 1962 album Albert Camus, oeuvres completes, essais philosophiques, Le mythe de Sisyphe, L'homme revolte, Discours de Suede, lithographies originales de Andre Masson (Albert Camus, complete works, philosophical essays, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Rebel, Swedish Discourse, original lithographs by Andre Masson). Published by Imprimerie Nationale, Paris, under the direction of Andre Sauret, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 26, 1962, the composition reflects Masson's distinctively fluid, gestural, and psychological visual language, rooted in automatism and the exploration of the subconscious. Executed as a lithograph on velin d'Arches filigrane paper, this work measures 11 x 8.5 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. Printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, one of the foremost fine art lithographic ateliers of the twentieth century. About the Publication: Albert Camus, oeuvres completes, essais philosophiques, Le mythe de Sisyphe, L'homme revolte, Discours de Suede, lithographies originales de Andre Masson (Albert Camus, complete works, philosophical essays, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Rebel, Swedish Discourse, original lithographs by Andre Masson) stands as one of the most ambitious fine art literary-print projects of the postwar French publishing tradition, uniting the philosophical writings of Nobel Prize laureate Albert Camus with original lithographic interpretations by Andre Masson, produced under the direction of master publisher Andre Sauret. Conceived within the long lineage of deluxe French livre d'artiste production, the album was executed with extraordinary typographic, material, and artistic rigor. Printed by the historic Imprimerie Nationale—custodian of the Romain du Roi typeface commissioned by Louis XIV—the edition embodies centuries of French typographic heritage alongside the modernity of Masson's expressive visual language. Mourlot Freres, the premier lithographic atelier of mid-century Paris, produced the original lithographs, ensuring the highest fidelity to the artist's hand. The project forms the third volume of Camus’s collected works in Sauret's prestigious series, each volume integrating original prints, Japon Nacre inserts, and a rigorous justification of the edition. Its production represents a rare collaboration between one of France’s greatest philosophical voices and one of its most innovative modern artists. The album remains an important example of postwar intellectual-artistic synthesis, reflecting the cultural vitality of mid-century France and the continued evolution of the livre d'artiste as a vehicle for both literary and visual innovation. About the Artist: Andre Masson (1896–1987) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printmaker whose revolutionary exploration of automatism, abstraction, and the subconscious made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century modernism. Born in Balagny-sur-Therain and trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Masson combined classical discipline with a fiercely experimental spirit. As a leading member of the Surrealist movement founded by Andre Breton, he pioneered automatic drawing—an intuitive, instinctive method that sought to bypass conscious control and reveal the inner landscape of the mind. His work placed him in close dialogue with artistic visionaries such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose shared commitment to radical reinvention shaped the course of modern art. Masson’s fluid lines, organic forms, and symbolic energy forged a bridge between dream and reality, chaos and order, profoundly influencing later Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, and Willem de Kooning. Exiled to the United States during World War II, he became a pivotal link between European Surrealism and the emerging New York School. His later paintings evolved into lyrical abstraction, blending mythic imagery, natural rhythms, and cosmic harmony. Masson exhibited internationally throughout his long career, and his works are held in major museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou. His highest auction record was achieved by Massacre (1931), which sold for 9.1 million USD at Christie's Paris on October 20, 2022, cementing his legacy as one of the most visionary and influential artists of the modern era.
