About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Andre Minaux (1923–1986), titled La femme et l'oiseau (The Woman and the Bird), originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This elegant and introspective composition exemplifies Minaux’s mastery of form and tonal harmony, merging modern abstraction with classical poise. La femme et l'oiseau captures the quiet balance and emotional depth that define Minaux’s art—where figure and symbol coexist in lyrical stillness. The work reflects his dedication to structure, balance, and color as vehicles of contemplation, offering a serene meditation on presence and human grace. Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaboration with leading modern artists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Andre Minaux (1923–1986) Title: La femme et l'oiseau (The Woman and the Bird), 1972 Medium: Lithograph on velin d’Arches paper Dimensions: 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1972 Publisher: Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, 1972 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers. About the Publication: Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, represents one of the most distinguished collaborative projects in modern printmaking. Bringing together original lithographs by some of the most prominent artists of the 20th century, the album celebrates artistic friendship and creative exchange. La femme et l'oiseau (The Woman and the Bird) by Andre Minaux embodies the spirit of this collection, expressing refined emotion through measured composition and tonal harmony. Printed at Atelier Mourlot, the work exemplifies the technical and artistic excellence of mid-century French lithography. About the Artist: Andre Minaux (1923–1986) was a French painter, printmaker, and lithographer whose elegant synthesis of structure, color, and emotion made him one of the leading figures of postwar modernism in France. Born in Paris, Minaux studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts under Maurice Brianchon, where he developed a disciplined sense of composition and tone that would define his mature style. Immersed in the postwar Parisian avant-garde, he drew inspiration from Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose revolutionary ideas on abstraction, space, and form helped shape his artistic vision. Yet Minaux forged a distinct path, balancing the expressive vitality of modernism with the meditative restraint of classical form. His early paintings and lithographs—depicting figures, interiors, and still lifes—reveal a mastery of line, proportion, and subdued color, expressing quiet introspection rather than overt drama. As a central figure of the postwar Ecole de Paris, he exhibited alongside Bernard Buffet, Jean Jansem, and Paul Aizpiri, championing a new realism that united emotional humanity with modern clarity. By the 1950s, his collaboration with Atelier Mourlot placed him among the great masters of modern printmaking, following in the footsteps of Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall. Over time, Minaux’s art evolved toward elegant abstraction, distilling form into large, harmonious planes of color that exuded serenity and balance. His figures and still lifes became meditations on silence and presence, combining the poetic stillness of Miro and the spatial tension of Giacometti with the structural rhythm of Calder and Kandinsky. Deeply humanistic, Minaux believed that art should convey emotional truth through simplicity, influencing later generations of painters who admired his union of restraint and feeling. Exhibited internationally and collected by major museums including the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris and MoMA in New York, Minaux’s works remain sought after for their timeless elegance, tonal sophistication, and contemplative power. Standing in dialogue with the great innovators of the 20th century—Picasso, Dali, Miro, Giacometti, Calder, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray—Minaux’s art endures as a testament to the quiet strength of balance and form. His highest auction record was achieved by Nu Assis, which sold for $109,226 at Artcurial, Paris, on December 5, 2017, reaffirming Andre Minaux’s reputation as one of the most refined, contemplative, and collectible modern painters of his generation.
