Tàpies se inicia en el arte durante la larga convalecencia de una enfermedad pulmonar. Progresivamente se dedicará con mayor intensidad al dibujo y a la pintura, y finalmente deja sus estudios de Derecho para dedicarse por completo al arte. Cofundador de “Dau al Set” en 1948, empieza a exponer en los Salones de Octubre de Barcelona, así como en el Salón de los Once celebrado en Madrid en 1949. Tras realizar su primera muestra individual en las Galerías Layetanas, viaja a París en 1950, becado por el Instituto Francés. A raíz de su exposición individual de 1953 en la galería neoyorquina de Martha Jackson, se afianza su proyección internacional. Ha obtenido premios como el Príncipe de Asturias, El Praemium Imperiale de la Japan Art Association, el Premio Nacional de Cultura, el Gran Premio de Pintura de Francia, etc., y se le han dedicado antológicas en Tokio, Nueva York, Roma, Ámsterdam, Madrid, Venecia, Milán, Viena y Bruselas. Está representado en los principales museos de todo el mundo, como la fundación que lleva su nombre en Barcelona, el Reina Sofía de Madrid, los Guggenheim de Berlín, Bilbao y Nueva York, el Museo de Arte Fukoka de Japón, el MoMA de Nueva York o la Tate Gallery de Londres.
