About the Item
This exquisite lithograph by Apel·les Fenosa (1899–1988), titled Tramontane, originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This graceful and rhythmic composition captures Fenosa’s lyrical interpretation of movement and form, translating his sculptural sensibility into the two-dimensional medium of lithography. Tramontane embodies his fascination with nature’s vitality and transformation, fusing organic lines with a sense of inner rhythm and poetic motion. The work evokes the Mediterranean lightness and tactile intimacy that characterize Fenosa’s sculptural oeuvre—where form breathes, flows, and feels alive.
Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaboration with leading modern artists of the 20th century.

Notes:
Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers.
About the Publication:
Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, is among the most celebrated collaborative lithographic portfolios of the postwar era. Conceived as an homage to artistic friendship and creative kinship, the album unites works by leading modern masters whose lithographs reflect the diversity and vitality of 20th-century artistic expression. Tramontane by Apel·les Fenosa exemplifies this spirit of poetic collaboration, translating the sculptor’s tactile lyricism into the visual rhythm and grace of lithography. Printed at the legendary Atelier Mourlot, the album represents a pinnacle of modern printmaking craftsmanship and artistic dialogue.
About the Artist:
Apel·les Fenosa (1899–1988) was a Spanish-Catalan sculptor whose poetic, organic, and deeply human approach to modern sculpture made him one of the most admired and collectible artists of the 20th century. Born in Barcelona, Fenosa began his career as a ceramicist before devoting himself entirely to sculpture, developing a tactile sensibility that would define his art for decades. Moving to Paris in the early 1920s, he entered the avant-garde epicenter of modern art, forming lasting friendships with Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. These artistic exchanges profoundly influenced Fenosa’s aesthetic, yet he remained distinct in his lyrical pursuit of form and feeling—infusing the intellectual rigor of modernism with the sensual rhythm of the Mediterranean spirit. His sculptures, characterized by fluid, organic lines and subtle movement, evoke both human emotion and the natural world, transforming clay and bronze into living poetry. Throughout his career, Fenosa sought to reveal the “life within matter,” treating each sculpture as a dialogue between artist and element. His works—often mythological, feminine, and symbolic—embody metamorphosis, renewal, and harmony, capturing both motion and stillness in a single gesture. During the 1930s and 1940s, his art evolved toward greater abstraction, echoing the biomorphic forms of Miro and the emotional intensity of Giacometti, while remaining rooted in a humanistic vision of beauty and transformation. Exiled during the Spanish Civil War, Fenosa continued to work in France, where his reputation flourished among writers, poets, and fellow artists such as Paul Eluard, Jean Cocteau, and Paul Valery, who praised the spiritual depth of his sculptures. His mastery of terracotta, plaster, and bronze positioned him alongside the most significant sculptors of his generation, and his exhibitions at the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon d’Automne, and the Venice Biennale earned him international acclaim. Fenosa’s influence extended to later artists, architects, and designers who sought to integrate organic form and emotional resonance into modern abstraction, anticipating movements in biomorphic and environmental art. His work is represented in major museum collections, including the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris, and the Fundacio Apel·les Fenosa in El Vendrell, Catalonia. Collectors prize his sculptures for their sensuality, vitality, and timeless elegance—works that seem to breathe with rhythm and grace. Standing alongside Picasso, Dali, Miro, Giacometti, Calder, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray, Fenosa occupies a vital place in the evolution of modern art, bridging the spiritual and the material with unmatched lyricism. His highest auction record was achieved by Jeune Fille au Papillon, which sold for $175,000 at Sotheby’s, London, on March 28, 2019, reaffirming Apel·les Fenosa’s enduring legacy as one of the most visionary, poetic, and collectible sculptors of the modern era.
