About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Bernard Cathelin (1919–2004), titled L’Arlequin (The Harlequin), originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This elegant composition reflects Cathelin’s poetic mastery of color and form, combining geometric structure with painterly sensitivity. L’Arlequin evokes both mystery and vitality through its rich tonal layers and rhythmic balance of light and shadow. With its refined abstraction and nuanced palette, the lithograph captures Cathelin’s enduring fascination with the emotional resonance of color and texture, revealing his ability to infuse modern composition with timeless grace and intimacy. Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superior craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, whose technical excellence helped define modern fine art printing in the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Bernard Cathelin (1919–2004) Title: L’Arlequin (The Harlequin), 1972 Medium: Lithograph on velin d’Arches paper Dimensions: 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1972 Publisher: Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, 1972 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers. About the Publication: Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, stands as one of the defining collective art projects of postwar modernism. Created as a tribute to friendship and artistic collaboration, the album brings together works by many of the 20th century’s most renowned artists who had maintained close working relationships with the master printer Fernand Mourlot. L’Arlequin by Bernard Cathelin reflects this spirit of shared creativity, showcasing his lyrical approach to color and structure within the rich tradition of modern French printmaking. The publication remains a landmark example of the unity between artist, printer, and publisher that defined the golden age of Parisian lithography. About the Artist: Bernard Cathelin (1919–2004) was a French painter and printmaker celebrated for his poetic color harmonies, textured surfaces, and refined modernism that bridged classical beauty and 20th-century abstraction. Born in Paris, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs under Maurice Brianchon and emerged as a leading figure of the School of Paris, a postwar generation of artists who carried forward the legacy of European modernism. Deeply influenced by the structural innovations of Cubism, the chromatic expressiveness of Fauvism, and the lyrical abstraction of the mid-century avant-garde, Cathelin developed a signature style defined by bold brushwork, luminous color, and a tactile depth of surface. His still lifes, portraits, and landscapes—especially those inspired by the Drome region of France, as well as his travels to Mexico, India, and Japan—exude serenity, vitality, and a timeless sense of balance. Working within the vibrant Parisian art scene, Cathelin moved among many of the greatest innovators of modern art, including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, sharing their dedication to reimagining color, form, and emotional expression. His paintings and lithographs are distinguished by their synthesis of abstraction and figuration, their compositional harmony, and their lyrical interplay of light and texture, qualities that have influenced later generations of European and international artists drawn to his fusion of structural clarity and expressive freedom. Over the course of his career, Cathelin exhibited widely across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, gaining international acclaim for his radiant palette and poetic visual language. Today, his works are held in major private and public collections worldwide and remain highly sought after by collectors for their sensuality, sophistication, and quiet strength. His highest recorded auction result is approximately $119,005 for Roses blanches pour Paris (paravent), sold at Mainichi Auction, Tokyo, in 2024, affirming Bernard Cathelin’s enduring reputation as one of France’s most beloved and distinctive modern colorists.
