About the Item

In this untitled lithograph, Eva Kolosvary-Stupler distills form into a dialogue between mass and motion. On the left, a vertical ochre bar asserts stability, while from it emerges a dynamic triangular figure punctuated by curling voids and looping apertures. These negative spaces carve rhythm into the structure, suggesting both mechanical articulation and organic growth. Subtle embossing across the background introduces an additional layer of symbolic depth. Rendered in a restrained palette of ochre and muted tones, the lithograph emphasizes clarity of line and texture over color. The tension between solidity and permeability, between surface and depth, positions the work at the threshold of figuration and abstraction. Please note: A few small yellow-brown spots consistent with age-related mold staining are visible upon close inspection. These do not detract from the overall visual impact of the work and are typical of vintage paper prints of this era. About the Artist Born in 1937 in Budapest as Éva Stein, Eva Kolosvary-Stupler survived the trauma of World War II in hiding with her mother and sister while her father was sent to forced labor. Following the Hungarian uprising in 1956, she fled to Switzerland with her husband, the graphic artist Pál Kolozsváry. The couple eventually emigrated to California, where Kolosvary-Stupler pursued her education in the arts—first at El Camino Junior College and then earning an MFA from California State University, Long Beach, in 1980. Though her early career focused on ceramics, where she gained international recognition, her later artistic practice expanded to include graphic arts, printmaking, and assemblage. She mastered the intaglio technique in the 1970s and became an influential figure in the Los Angeles art scene, serving as president of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society in 1980. Her work was widely exhibited, with numerous pieces entering significant institutional collections, including the Smithsonian. Context and Legacy Created during the 1970s, this lithograph belongs to a body of work in which Kolosvary-Stupler explored abstraction as a vessel for existential themes—balance, rootedness, and transformation. At a time when artists were rethinking figuration through minimalist and symbolic geometries, she infused the vocabulary of modern abstraction with personal resonance. The etched background, with its quiet, circuit-like designs, reflects her interest in invisible systems, both natural and human-made. Her art, shaped by a life of displacement and renewal, speaks to resilience and adaptability. In this way, the lithograph reflects not only formal experimentation but also the artist’s own journey—bridging European modernism and the California printmaking movement. Collector’s Note As an Artist Proof, this lithograph offers a rare view into Kolosvary-Stupler’s conceptual process. The combination of embossed textures, restrained palette, and symbolic density makes it a compelling addition for collectors of mid-century abstraction, émigré artists, or postwar printmaking. Professionally framed, the work stands as both a visual meditation on structure and void, and a testament to the clarity and inventiveness of Kolosvary-Stupler’s vision.

Large Geometric Abstract. Traces No.9 Pour une Archéologie du Présent.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large 1970s abstract geometric acrylic and oil on plywood panel signed Rivel and dated 1977 to the bottom left. The painting is titled to the rear of the panel. Numbers of colour fields in muted shades jostle against one another. It is the shapes and the space between them which give energy to the painting whilst the colour palette restrains. The painting is highly textured as the artist has applied the paint thickly and energetically with both palette knife and large brushstrokes. At times layers of paint reveal underlying colours. This painting fits perfectly into the abstract genre with its focus on its formal qualities over and above its subject matter. Furthermore the artist experiments with reconstructing shapes and rejecting three dimensional perspective. A fine example of non objective art...

Large Modernist Geometric Abstract Painting
By Gregg Robinson
Located in Surfside, FL
Gregg Robinson, American (born 1948) "Cipher Bar 19" Oil on Canvasboard Panel. Artist signed, title and dated 1990 far right. Very minor rubbing to paint. Panel measures 15-1/4" H x 63-1/2" W, frame measures 24-1/4" H x 72-1/4" W GREGG ROBINSON The universe of visual art encompasses a huge spectrum of motivation and means of expression. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself. The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin. CORPORATE COLLECTIONS: Allstate Insurance NBC Productions Alaska...
