This square woodcut print on paper is composed of an abstract pattern of clustered dark navy blue shapes over a silver background with a subtle metallic sheen. The monotype brings to mind the tradition of Japanese printing while being distinctly contemporary.
Edition 1/1 (monotype). Signed and stamped CCP (Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, CT) on verso. Framed in a light natural wood white-rubbed ash float frame with UV glass, 36 x 36 inches (unframed), $3000. (unframed), 41.25 x 41.25 inches (framed), $3890. (framed).
Eve Stockton’s woodcut prints are inspired by close observation of nature and her eclectic interest in science. Her woodcuts depict nature at different scales, often simultaneously. Whether micro or macro in scope, nature’s energy is evoked in abstracted shapes and chromatic layering. The springboards to Stockton’s art are the natural world observed and the primordial world imagined. Her imagery often starts off connected to a specific place. Her nature-based prints seem familiar at first. Upon closer observation, however, the imagery is rendered to suggest dualities, such as order/chaos and monumental/microbial.
