About the Item
Iris Eye #13, feels like a blossoming aperture—its center a radiant star encircled by deep magenta segments that suggest both iris fibers and flower petals. The repeated arc forms build a lattice, almost like stained glass, framing the inner bloom with rhythmic structure. Around the periphery, soft green leaves appear, grounding the eye in botanical associations and linking vision with growth and renewal.
Compositionally, the balance between the concentric flower-like center and the surrounding leaf motifs creates a dialogue between inner and outer, micro and macro. The magenta core pulls inward, evoking intensity and perception, while the outer pale halo disperses into diffuse light. The entire work reads as both ocular and cosmological: an iris as lens, a flower as mandala, and a galaxy spiraling outward. Time is suggested here not as strict chronology but as organic unfolding, like the seasonal cycle of bloom and decay.
This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image size is 57" x 32" with a 1.5" white border. Paper size is 60" x 35". Signed in the lower right corner of the image. Only an edition of 2.
The edition is unframed, however, framing is recommended before shipping.
All work is shipped flat, not rolled.
In this recent work, the artist has focused on the production of abstract painterly images using a variety of digital methods and processes. These new images are at, what he calls, the “Center of Seeing” - closeups of a moment in time and space from the center of his digitally made kaleidoscopic videos. These captured images contain circle, star, or other primal geometric shapes – some resembling mandalas or flowers of a new interior space. Spiritual, psychological, with an emanating quality of light, they are vaguely familiar yet new.
Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. His studio is located in the Flower District in Manhattan.

Gary Cruz
Gary Cruz begins his creative process with the camera on his phone. Trained as an architect and designer, Cruz has a particular interest in creating and conflating depth within the pictorial plane. His final images compress space where the back is front and outside is inside. Past, present and future coexist simultaneously in his work where space is ambiguous. The works embody the duality of contemporary photographic techniques and the tradition of gestural painting. Cruz earned a degree in architecture from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. He attended the Bronx Museum of the Arts, AIM Program, Bronx, New York. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant and Robert Rauschenberg Change Inc. Grant. A native of Texas, Cruz now lives and works in New York City.
