Glenn Ligon's (b. 1960) practice is rooted in the examination of Black Identity within the context of American history, literature, and societal structures. His artworks build on the legacies of abstraction and conceptual art.
He is best known for his text-based works, which include elements from protest signs and writings by prominent African-American writers (such as James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison). By densely layered letters, Ligon's imagery evolves into abstraction as he creates scenes that simultaneously demand to be read while disrupting legibility.
Executed during the 2000s, a period when Ligon expanded beyond text-based works into abstraction, this lithograph features a stark, contemplative silhouette of a tree. Rendered in rippling droplets, the image vibrates visually, becoming less clear the longer it is examined.
