About the Item
This exquisite lithograph by Jasper Johns (born 1930), titled Summer Green, State II, originates from the 1991 publication Jasper Johns, The Seasons, November 9, 1991 - January 4, 1992. Published by Brooke Alexander Editions, New York, and printed by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), Bay Shore, this work reflects Johns continued investigation of symbolic structure, perceptual variation, and temporal progression central to The Seasons series. Summer Green, State II specifically embodies Johns method of reworking, doubling, and re-staging imagery across states and media—an approach that allows the artist to examine how meaning shifts through repetition, modification, and translation from painterly gesture to printed mark.
Executed as a lithograph from two aluminum plates on velin Fred Siegenthaler paper, this work measures 11.5 x 8.5 inches overall (29.21 x 21.59 cm); 9.5 x 6.25 inches (24.13 x 15.88 cm) image size. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. Printed by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), Bay Shore, one of the most historically significant printmaking workshops of the twentieth century.

About the Publication:
Jasper Johns, The Seasons, November 9, 1991 - January 4, 1992 was a comprehensive publication created to accompany the exhibition of Johns monumental Seasons cycle, a cornerstone of his late twentieth-century practice. Produced by Brooke Alexander Editions in collaboration with Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), the publication functioned simultaneously as a critical document, and a vehicle for original graphic work. Within this context, Summer Green, State II served as an integral component of the editioned material, offering insight into how Johns translated the chromatic, symbolic, and structural language of the Seasons paintings into the medium of lithography. The inclusion of a two-plate lithograph underscores the technical and conceptual sophistication of Johns partnership with ULAE, where many of his most groundbreaking prints were realized. The publication provides historical context, visual analysis, and thematic continuity, situating this lithograph within the broader cycle of seasonal allegories, personal iconography, and perceptual inquiry that defines one of Johns most celebrated bodies of work.
About the Artist:
Jasper Johns (born 1930) is widely regarded as one of the most influential and transformative American artists of the postwar era, a painter and printmaker whose groundbreaking fusion of abstraction, symbolism, and conceptual inquiry placed him in direct dialogue with towering modernists such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray while establishing a new visual and intellectual foundation for contemporary art; emerging in the mid 1950s with his revolutionary paintings of flags, targets, numbers, alphabets, and other everyday symbols, Johns rejected the emotional volatility of Abstract Expressionism and instead introduced a cool, analytical approach grounded in the semiotic play between object and image, employing encaustic, collage, graphite, and sculptural relief to create layered works that examine how meaning is constructed and perceived; his dialogues with Duchamps conceptualism, Picassos structural inventiveness, Miro and Kandinskys color logic, Giacomettis existential figuration, and Man Rays experimental attitude helped shape a singular aesthetic that directly influenced and helped catalyze Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art, inspiring contemporaries and successors including Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, Glenn Ligon, Christopher Wool, Mark Bradford, Mark Grotjahn, and Wade Guyton; celebrated for more than seven decades, Johns work is held in the worlds most prestigious museums—including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, and the Moderna Museet—and he is recognized as one of the most intellectually rigorous and technically inventive artists of the 20th and 21st centuries; his market remains exceptionally strong, with his highest auction record achieved on November 11, 2014, when Flag (1983) sold for 36000000 USD at Sothebys New York.
