About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Jean Bazaine (1904–2001), titled Composition bleue (Blue Composition), from the folio Derriere le miroir, No. 55-56, originates from the 1953 edition published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1953. A masterful study in color and movement, this composition exemplifies Bazaine’s lyrical abstraction, where the spiritual and the natural converge through light-infused tonal harmonies. The interplay of gestural rhythm and chromatic depth captures his poetic vision of nature transformed by emotion. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 15 x 11 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. Founded by the visionary art dealer and publisher Aime Maeght, the series served as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in its own right, uniting original lithographs by leading modern and contemporary artists with critical essays, poetry, and design of the highest quality. Printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and Arte, Derriere le miroir became synonymous with the artistic vanguard of postwar Europe. Each issue was devoted to a single artist or theme and published to accompany exhibitions at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, and Alberto Giacometti, among others. The publication reflected Maeght’s belief that art should be both accessible and elevated—an ideal realized through its luxurious production values, meticulous printing, and collaboration with the greatest creative minds of its time. About the Artist: Jean Bazaine (1904–2001) was a French painter, muralist, and stained-glass artist renowned for his lyrical abstractions that bridge the emotional intensity of color with the structural harmony of form. A central figure in postwar French modernism, Bazaine rejected pure abstraction in favor of a poetic fusion between nature and spirituality, using fluid brushwork and radiant chromatic harmonies to evoke light, water, and movement. Deeply influenced by the modern masters—Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—Bazaine developed a visual language rooted in the traditions of Fauvism and Expressionism while advancing a distinctly French lyrical abstraction. Over his prolific career, he created monumental stained-glass commissions for cathedrals and public spaces, as well as acclaimed easel paintings that reflect a lifelong dialogue between nature, spirit, and color. His works are held in major museums including the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate, and continue to command attention among collectors and institutions worldwide. The highest price ever paid for a Jean Bazaine artwork at auction is approximately 160,000 USD, achieved in 2021 at Artcurial Paris for L’Ete (1954).
