About the Item

This exquisite linocut by John Joseph Wardell Power (1881–1943), titled L'homme calculateur (The Calculating Man), from the album XXe siecle, Chroniques du jour, 13 rue Valette (5e), Directeur G. di San Lazzaro, Sommaire du no. 5/6, 1939, originates from the 1939 edition published by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, in collaboration with Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. L'homme calculateur exemplifies Power’s mastery of geometric abstraction and his synthesis of structure, rhythm, and harmony—an elegant reflection of his belief that art is a bridge between intellect and emotion, science and spirit. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: John Joseph Wardell Power (1881–1943) was an Australian-born modernist painter, theorist, and philanthropist whose profound engagement with Cubism, Constructivism, and non-objective abstraction positioned him among the most intellectually advanced artists of the early 20th century. A visionary who bridged European modernism and Australian cultural identity, Power viewed art as both a scientific and spiritual pursuit—an expression of universal order through geometry, rhythm, and the evolution of human consciousness. Born in Sydney, Power initially trained as a physician before turning to art, studying in Paris at the Academie Ranson under Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. Immersed in the Parisian avant-garde, he moved within circles that included Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, absorbing their revolutionary ideas while developing his own belief that abstraction could serve as a bridge between intellect and emotion, science and spirit. Deeply influenced by the formal precision of Cubism, the metaphysical theories of Kandinsky, and the conceptual discipline of Duchamp, Power’s art combined rigorous geometry with lyrical restraint, resulting in paintings of exceptional balance, clarity, and meditative calm. His 1932 treatise *Art and the Evolution of Consciousness* articulated his belief that art was not merely aesthetic but evolutionary—an essential force in humanity’s intellectual and spiritual growth—and positioned him as a major thinker within European abstraction alongside Piet Mondrian and Jean Helion. His compositions from the 1930s, characterized by architectural order, harmonious proportion, and refined chromatic structure, anticipated later developments in Minimalism and Op Art, influencing artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Bridget Riley, and Sol LeWitt. Though he lived primarily in France, Power’s 1961 bequest to the University of Sydney established the Power Institute of Fine Arts, one of the most important cultural legacies in Australian history, ensuring that his belief in art as a universal and intellectual endeavor would inspire generations. His influence also extended to key Australian modernists such as Grace Crowley, Ralph Balson, and Fred Williams, whose work echoed his principles of balance, clarity, and abstraction. Exhibited in major European salons and represented in the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Power’s paintings are celebrated for their fusion of philosophy and form—works that seem to embody the very rhythm of thought itself. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, John Joseph Wardell Power remains a towering figure in the evolution of modern abstraction—a visionary who united science, spirituality, and structure into a timeless language of visual harmony. His highest auction record was achieved by *Abstract Composition*, which sold for $327,000 USD at Deutscher and Hackett, Sydney, on April 27, 2022, reaffirming his enduring importance as one of the most forward-thinking, influential, and collectible modern artists of his generation.
