About the Item

Judy Pfaff (1946) The Mirror (1998) Etching and encaustic on Crown Kozo Size: 71.75 x 31.75 in (182.2 x 80.6 cm) Frame size: 77.75 x 37.75 in (197.5 x 95.8 cm) Edition of 30 Hand signed and numbered below the image === Judy Pfaff is frequently hailed by critics as a trailblazer in installation art, yet this popular designation only partially captures the breadth and ongoing evolution of her dynamic, multifaceted practice that continues to develop after many decades. Born in London in 1946, she earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 1971 and her MFA from Yale University in 1973, where she trained under the guidance of Al Held. Pfaff's creative output bridges multiple mediums—including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and large-scale installations—though it is perhaps most aptly characterized as painting extended into three-dimensional space. These immersive, site-responsive environments reshape the spaces they occupy, turning them into temporary, welcoming realms for both the audience and the artist herself. Infused with rich references to spiritual themes, botanical forms, and art-historical motifs, Pfaff's installations evoke the solemn grandeur of a cathedral and the fleeting beauty of a mandala in equal measure, without any sense of conflict. Mirroring the transient nature of a mandala, her works exist intensely but briefly: they are meticulously built over months or even years, only to be dismantled and partially discarded once an exhibition ends. Every piece responds intimately to the unique architecture of its location—the proportions of the room, the height of the ceiling, the view beyond the windows—ensuring that no two presentations are ever identical. This profound commitment to her audience, involving immense effort for experiences that may last just days or weeks, distinguishes Pfaff from many peers in other fields who can depend on the ongoing market for standalone artworks. By deliberately avoiding narrative interpretations, she channels an intense, almost fierce dedication to the purely visual and sensory experience—something striking in a time when words and explanations often overshadow the act of making. Pfaff's work has appeared in the Whitney Biennials of 1975, 1981, and 1987, and she represented the United States at the 1998 São Paulo Bienal. Examples of her art are held in prestigious permanent collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tate Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Detroit Institute of Arts, among others. Among her many honors are the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center (2014), a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2004), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1983). She resides and maintains her studio in Tivoli, New York.
