About the Item
Jules Olitski (Russian-American, 1922 - 2007) was a Russian-born American artist who played a pivotal role in the development of Color Field painting in the 1960s. Born Jevel Demikovsky in Snovsk, Soviet Russia, he emigrated to Brooklyn as an infant after his father was executed. He studied at the National Academy of Design and in Paris, and later taught at Bennington College alongside artists like Paul Feeley and Anthony Caro. Olitski pioneered spray-painted techniques on unprimed canvas, creating ethereal, suspended color fields, and continued experimenting with acrylics, gels, and sculptural surfaces throughout his career. Our Olitski is a handprinted serigraph, remarkably painterly in its effect.

Jules Olitski
Jules Olitski was an abstract Color Field painting in the mid-1960s, Olitski focused on the material qualities of surface and color in painting, rather than the personal expression of the artist. He pioneered a technique using an industrial spray gun to lightly apply paint on unprimed canvas, creating an effect of hazy color suspended midair. Even after returning to the brush, Olitski maintained this airy interaction of color and light. Olitski represented the United States in the 1966 Venice Biennale, and was given the first solo exhibition for a living American artist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969.
