About the Item

The essence of Lee Krasner's (1908-1984) biography is familiar to anyone who has studied women's role in 20th century art history: An accomplished artist whose own output gets eclipsed or compromised because she devoted herself to supporting and promoting her husband's artwork. Fortunately in recent years, there has been a concerted effort, by scholars, dealers and curators to reexamine and expand the cannon in hopes of including more female artists. One of the artists that has been at the forefront of this new mentality is Lee Krasner. How and why has she been marginalized from the narrative surrounding the development and importance of Abstract Expressionism is finally being addressed. We highly recommend the Gail Levin's biography of Lee Krasner We are pleased to be offering this dynamic screenprint by Lee Krasner. This work is a prime example of her preferred forms; Matisse-inspired dense shapes surrounded by more gestural forms and outlines. As Krasner's auction record stands at 11.6 million, her fine screenprints are a must-have for the young collector passionate about American Abstract Expressionism. Questions about this artwork? Blue Splash
By Dan Christensen
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Dan Christensen (1942-2007) is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost color abstractionists. Over the course of forty years as an artist, Christensen was devoted to exploring and expanding the constantly shifting trends of 20th century abstraction. Christensen established his reputation at the end of the 1960s, as began using spray guns to create colorful stacks, loops, and lines in his artworks. This body of work was considered by the legendary art critic Clement Greenberg among the most original abstract paintings of the decade. Unlike many of his contemporaries who dedicated their practice to a signature style, Christensen was unrelentingly curious and allowed his dynamic version of abstraction to evolve as he tried new techniques and aesthetics. During the 1980's and 1990's in particular, Christensen focused on experimenting with different forms of washing, spraying, and layering colours over top of each other. The works from Christensen's late period combine the gestural drama of Abstract Expressionism with the stained surface look popularized by the color field artists. The aesthetic complexity he achieved with these combined techniques are perfectly demonstrated in this later untitled work (aka "Blue...
