About the Item

Martyn Brewster (b.1952) Lightfall 2019 Woodcut edition (40 ) Image 20.0 x 20.0 cm paper 29.0 x 29.0 cm Unframed Martyn Brewster’s abstract paintings are strongly linked to the English landscape tradition. His paintings and drawings explore the coastal light of the south coast of Dorset where he lives and works. In his recent work, Brewster often uses a softer palette and square forms which, although reminiscent of boats or islands, deserve to be viewed in less representational terms. Brewster has had retrospective exhibitions at the Russell– Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, 1997; the Royal West of England Academy, 2001; and the Study Gallery of Modern Art, Poole, 2003, amongst others. He has won numerous awards and has work in private, public and corporate collections worldwide. Public collections include the Victoria Albert Museum, British Museum, Russell–Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Arts Institute at Bournemouth and Bournemouth University. “My primary concern has always been with painting. I have never ceased to be fascinated and enthralled by the tactile and evocative qualities of paint, oil paint especially. Early on, I developed a particular interest in colour and abstraction which is the key to my work, coupled with a lyrical and poetic response to both Nature and the medium. I have always loved the related activities of drawing and printmaking. The drawings represent a more direct response to nature, and all are done outside, in front of the motif. It is a challenge to deal with light and shade, space and atmosphere, and to find new compositions amongst such an endless multitude of forms. The prints are the opposite and allow for a complete absorption in colour and abstraction free from any directly associated references. Drawing influences printmaking, which affects painting and so on, each practice constantly enriching and extending the other, and inspiring new work.” © Modern Contemporary Art 2021

Abstract (Edition 24/75)
By Bram Van Velde
Located in Missouri, MO
Abstract (Edition 24/75) By Bram van Velde (1895-1981) Signed and Numbered Bottom Center Without Frame: 37" x 24" With Frame: 37.75" x 24.75" Bram (Abraham Gerardus) van Velde was a Dutch painter known for an intensely colored and geometric semi-representational painting style related to Tachisme*, and Lyrical Abstraction*. He is often seen as member of the School of Paris* but his work resides somewhere between expressionism* and surrealism*, and evolved in the 1960s into an expressive abstract art. His paintings from the 1950s are similar to the contemporary work of Matisse, Picasso and the abstract expressionist Adolph Gottlieb. He was championed by a number of French-speaking writers, including Samuel Beckett and the poet André du...

Untitled #2
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Untitled #2" is a colors monotype on Arches paper by Dutch artist Frans Horbach. It is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist. The image (plate mark) is 19.5 x 15.5 inches, sheet size is 30 x 22.25 inches. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright, has never been framed. About the artist: Born in Holland, Dutch artist Frans Horbach first visited New York when he was 17 years old, traveling on a cargo ship from Rotterdam, just as his fellow country man Willem de Kooning had done years before. Two years later he left Holland and emigrated to California. During the years that he lived and worked as a professional artist in America, one of the main sources of artistic influence came from artists belonging to what is now known as the New York school of American lyrical abstract expressionist art - Rothko, Pollock, De Kooning... He was attracted by their ideas, style of work, and more importantly, by their vital energy and uninhibited self-confidence. Horbach's work also was influenced, more subtely perhaps, by his contact with indigeneous Indian people during his journeys in the American South-West and Mexico. These encounters were a rich source of inspiration - they became integral to a philosophical framework which involved the appreciation of physical space in a poetic and artistic sense. In later years, as the result of his long-time interest in oriental art and philosophy, some of his work show a distinct affinity with the aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Japanse...
