Notes:
Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album, illustrated by Pelayo is the second volume of the edition of the complete works of Albert Camus directed by Andre Sauret. It was composed by hand with a new cast of Romain du Roi de corps 14, engraved by Grandjean in 1699 on the order of Louis XIV. The draw was completed in 1962 on the presses of l'Imprimerie Nationale, Daniel Gibelin being director and Georges Arnoult inspector of typography. The original lithographies were drawn on the presses of Mourlot Freres. Justification for the draw, CC examples on velin d'Arches filigrane, "Albert Camus" numbered to the press from I to CC. Each of the six volumes includes, printed on Japon Nacre, a series of illustrations and an additional original lithography numbered and signed by the artist. MMMMDCCC examples on velin d'Arches filigrane, "Albert Camus" numbered to the press from CCI to VMMM, and some non-commerce examples reserved for publishing artisans. Compositions destroyed and stones erased after drawing.
About the Publication:
Albert Camus, oeuvres completes, Essais litteraires Noces, l'ete L'exil et le royaume L'envers et l'endroit Lithographies originales de Pelayo (Albert Camus, complete works, Literary Essays, Nuptials, Summer, Exile and the Kingdom, The Wrong Side and the Right Side, original lithographs by Pelayo) represents one of the most ambitious French literary-artistic projects of the postwar era, uniting Camus's philosophical and personal writings with original lithographs created expressly for this edition. Overseen by publisher Andre Sauret and produced at the historic Imprimerie Nationale, the series embodies the highest traditions of French fine printing through the use of the Romain du Roi typeface commissioned by Louis XIV, printed with exceptional craftsmanship alongside original lithographs drawn on the presses of Mourlot Freres. As part of a six-volume cycle pairing Camus's complete works with newly commissioned lithographic cycles by leading modern artists, this volume situates Pelayo within the distinguished lineage of twentieth-century painter-illustrators engaged in the livre d'artiste tradition. The edition includes separate Japon Nacre suites and additional signed lithographs in the deluxe tirage, while thousands of velin examples were produced for the standard issue, each retaining the same typographic and lithographic integrity. The project stands today as a landmark in mid-century French cultural production, combining literature, philosophy, and original art prints into a cohesive expression of Camus's existential humanism and the visual modernism of artists such as Pelayo, whose contributions helped elevate the entire series into one of the signature achievements of twentieth-century French art publishing.
About the Artist:
Orlando Pelayo (1920–1990) was a Spanish-born French painter, illustrator, and master draughtsman whose powerful fusion of expressionism, modernist structure, and poetic psychological depth established him as a distinctive voice within postwar European art and a vital contributor to the Ecole de Paris, drawing influence from the groundbreaking innovations of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray while moving in the same Parisian circles as Antoni Clave, Andre Masson, Pierre Soulages, Nicolas de Stael, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Jean Fautrier, and Jean Dubuffet; his multidisciplinary output—spanning canvases, ink drawings, lithographs, and highly regarded book illustrations—reflects a visual language rooted in the expressive tension between abstraction and figuration and anchored in existential meditations on exile, identity, Mediterranean culture, and the psychological fractures of the 20th century, profoundly influencing later figurative expressionists, neo-surrealists, and contemporary painters who look to his fusion of emotional intensity and modernist discipline as a model of postwar innovation; exhibited widely throughout France and Europe and included in important private and institutional collections, Pelayo remains celebrated for his ability to merge abstraction with human vulnerability, ensuring his continued relevance on the global market, with his highest auction record achieved on November 7, 2012, when Jeune Fille sold for 40,712 USD at Christie's Paris.
