About the Item
Complementary colors purple and yellow are on full display in this large acrylic screen print by Washington Color School artist Paul Reed. The purple stripes in the top left corner look as though they are nestled in leafy blue-green shapes. The orange vertical lines create a focal point for the viewer while the black lines, although they are the largest shapes, act as compositional support for the color surrounding them. The print has been recently framed in a birch wood frame with archival materials.
Paul Allen Reed (b. 1919, d. 2015) was an artist based in Washington D.C. who is remembered now as one of the original six members of the Washington Color School. After attending the Corcoran School of Art, he moved to New York City where he began working as a graphic designer. His work can be described as both geometric and balanced and his compositions are inherently based on his interpretation of color theory and relationship to form. His work has been shown in museums and galleries all over the nation, most predominantly in New York City, Washington D.C., and Chicago.
