Pierre Muckensturm
Pierre Muckensturm is a French abstract painter and print maker born in Strasbourg. His visual language is one of harmony, calm and timelessness built around softly textured surfaces and a muted, black and white palette. Muckensturm attended Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg. Later, while studying to become a teacher, he befriended Jean Jérôme, a university art instructor, who mentored him and inspired him to enroll in painting workshops. In 2010, he was an artist in residence at Boribana Museum of Contemporary Art in Dakar, Senegal. Muckensturm's work is included in multiple institutional collections, including that of the Museum of Fine Arts in Liège, Belgium, the Boribana Museum of Contemporary Art, Dakar, Senegal, and the Art Library of the City of La Roche-sur-Yon, France.
Muckensturm has exhibited extensively in Europe, as well as in the United States and Canada.Muckensturm is inspired by the concepts of calmness, constancy and temporality. His work visually expresses a sense of harmony with time. Initially a figurative painter, he discovered abstraction in 2004 on a visit to Notre Dame du Haut, a Modernist chapel in Ronchamp, France, designed by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, otherwise known as Le Corbusier. The simplicity of its forms brought Muckensturm a feeling of tranquility. He began seeking ways to directly express how felt that day. His search brought him into contact with the work of Julius Bissier, whose simple, organic, gestural brushstrokes, evocative of Taoist painting techniques, also communicate a sense of calmness. In 2010, during an artist residency in Africa, Muckensturm became inspired by the differences in how time is observed in Senegalese culture, versus the culture in which he was raised. He has since been exploring these various ideas in his work, expressing calmness and an open ended view of time.

Guifà e la Beretta Rossa, (Guifà and the Red Cap)
By Frank Stella
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Frank Stella’s Guifà e la Beretta Rossa, (Guifà and the Red Cap), 1989, is a captivating etching made of bold colors and large-scale geometric forms. This artwork was made in collaboration with well-known print maker Kenneth Tyler.
In the upper left of the image, rainbow hues of violet, blue, green and yellow decorate the paper. These colors contrast beautifully against the bold, inky strokes which color the background. Additionally, columns, pillars and cones are layered on top of one another as if in a collage. The shapes vary from perfect circles to abstract forms. Viewed in combination, the imagery dances before the viewer, inviting the imagination to construct its own interpretations. This series of mechanical shapes and 3-D composition are reminiscent of Stella’s relief paintings from the early 1980s. For an artist like Stella, experimenting with color, form and dimension is key. He proves to viewers he cannot be confined to a specific artistic genre or movement. Therefore, Stella's abstract works retain a timelessness which will transcend expectations of abstract art. Above all, this large-scale work is an exceptional example of Stella’s later period and his iconic artistic style.
The artist is a master of both painting and print. Oftentimes, Stella’s prints...

____________________________________________________
He began his career in 1943 studying architecture at the University of Madrid, but in 1947 he dedicated himself to drawing and sculpture, and in 1948 he moved to Paris, then the world capital of the arts. Although he abandoned his studies, his work betrays his architectural training, showing an underlying sense of structural organization, as well as discipline in materials, planning of spatial relationships, and scale of elements.
Over the years, the artist turned to materials that showed his investigations into conceptual questions and metaphysical concerns. Chillida's first stone and plaster creations oscillated between the human world and the natural world using figures and images of landscapes.
Consistently guided by the quality of space, density and rhythm, his works consider ways in which mass and volume contain space. His public works, which exist on a more massive scale, not only inhabit the space but also determine a qualifying space of their own.
His monumental sculptures, designed for both urban and more secluded spaces, are permanently installed internationally and constitute an important facet of his artistic production.
The main retrospectives of Chillida's graphic and sculptural work have been mounted by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (1966); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1979); National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1979); Guggenheim Museum (1980); Miramar Palace, San Sebastián (1992); and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1999).
Chillida received numerous awards, including the Grand International Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale (1958), the Kandinsky Prize (1960), the Carnegie Prize for Sculpture (1964), the Andrew...
