San Lazzaro, a visionary editor and champion of modernism, believed deeply in the synthesis of art and literature, creating a publication that served as both a scholarly platform and a collectors object. Across its many issues, XXe Siecle featured original lithographs, pochoirs, linocuts, and wood engravings by leading modern masters including Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miro, Braque, Leger, Kandinsky, and Calder, printed by premier ateliers such as Mourlot, Atelier Jacomet, and Lacouriere. The double issues of the 1950s reflect a flourishing period of postwar abstraction, sculpture, and avant garde experimentation. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential reference point in 20th century art history, prized by collectors, museums, and scholars worldwide. About the Artist: Robert Delaunay (1885–1941) was a groundbreaking French painter whose pioneering explorations of pure color, optical rhythm, and abstract form—developed alongside the innovations of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—led him from Post Impressionism and Cubism to the creation of Simultanism (Orphism), an influential movement co founded with Sonia Delaunay that profoundly shaped modern abstraction and inspired later artists such as Frantisek Kupka, Fernand Leger, Paul Klee, Bridget Riley, Josef Albers, Frank Stella, and Carmen Herrera. His work is housed in major museums including MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate Modern. His market legacy was underscored when Rythme circulaire sold for 7.2 million GBP (8.6 million USD) at Sothebys London on March 1, 2023.
