Robert Rahway Zakanitch (born 1935) is an American painter and was one of the founders of the Pattern and Decoration movement. His work is held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
Robert Zakanitch was born in 1935 in Elizabeth, New Jersey and grew up in Rahway. He lived and worked in New York City. At the time of his June 3 through September 17, 2017 exhibition in the Hudson River Museum, he had recently moved his residence and studio to Yonkers, New York
In the late 1960s he began experimenting with Color Field painting but would go on to be one of the founders of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the mid 1970s. While working in the Color Field he was strict to adhering to an abstract style inspired by Minimalism until he learned about decorative imagery. He kept the same color schemes and structures, but incorporated floral motif and a more painterly style.
He was one of the original painters of the Pattern and Decoration movements of the 1970s. (along with Cynthia Carlson, Brad Davis, Mary Grigoriadis, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Sonya Rapoport, Miriam Schapiro and Valerie Jaudon) The group began exhibiting together in 1976 in "Ten Approaches to the Decorative" at the Alessandra Gallery in New York, followed by "Pattern Painting" in 1977 at PS1 in Long Island City, Queens. Subsequently, over fifty group exhibitions featuring the founding artists were held in museums and galleries in Europe and the U.S. including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark, the Neue Galerie, in Aachen, Germany, the Pori Art Museum, the Mayor Gallery in London, Modern Art Oxford, and the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York.
In 2012 the "Conceptual Abstraction" exhibition of 1991 at the Sidney Janis Gallery, a survey of twenty contemporary abstract painters, organized by Carroll Janis and Jaudon, was revisited at the Hunter College Galleries in New York City and curated by Joachim Pissarro and Pepe Karmel. Among the participants were Ross Bleckner, Peter Halley, Sherrie Levine, Philip Taaffe and Peter Schuyff.

Robert Zakanitch
Robert Zakanitch has been exhibiting in New York since 1965. He is one of the founders of the pattern and decorative movement. He has had group exhibitions at the Whitney Annual, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. His work can be found in permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Albright Knox Museum, Brooklyn Museum and the Tate Gallery, London. He has had one-man shows in Paris, Basel, Zürich, Berlin, and Koln and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995. Most contemporary art history books include Robert Zakanitch. In 2003, as with his important paintings of pattern and decoration, he exhibited his "Aggressive Goodness" acrylic and gouache paintings a series of dog paintings which show that art can lift the human spirit. In his own words his dog paintings are “to remind us of our compassion and evoke nurturing, caring, sentimentality, romance, kindness, etiquette (that’s right, etiquette), sweetness, respect, beauty and the sense of well being”.

M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931.
Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies.
