The Russian painter Serge Poliakoff (Moscow 1900–1969 Paris) is considered the most important representative of the so-called ‘Nouvelle Ècole de Paris’.
At first, he preferred figurative painting in the academic tradition, such as landscapes and nudes, but later – under the strong influence of Wassily Kandinsky – devoted himself entirely to abstraction. Initially in grey-brown, then in luminous compositions, he assembled asymmetrical puzzled colour surfaces without infringing upon the balance of harmony. Poliakoff carefully studied the reciprocal effect of colours to arrive at contrasting but clear surfaces. Yellow, blue and red repeatedly returned. In his late work, he preferred the monochromy of colours within his pictorial language. Poliakoff continued to work on his concept of abstract colour painting until his death.

Serge Poliakoff was a Russian-born French modernist painter belonging to the New Ecole de Paris (Tachisme). His father, a Kyrgyz, supplied the army with horses that he bred himself and also owned a racing stable.
