About the Item
Amsterdam is a unique collectors box for everyone with an interest in contemporary modern minimalist prints. This custom made box contains 10 small etching aquatint prints depicting details of old Amsterdam house facades. Only a few boxes from the original 1984 edition of 50 boxes are still available from the artist's private collection. Images show edition 7/50 but this box contains edition 3/50. Paper size used is 25x25 cm, actual etching is 10x10 cm. Each print could be separately framed and presented on a wall, but leaving the prints in the box and ocassionally leafing through it and contemplating the beauty of each individual print makes for a magic, almost meditative experience. Also makes for a great gift!
Well known Dutch art historian Jaap Nijstad wrote about these prints: "He made small series of etchings and lithographs in which he zoomed deep in on a subject. The result is an exceptional area of overlap in which realism and abstraction intertwine. The works are characterised by a pronounced frontality. The position of the artist is almost always perpendicular to his subject, never diagonally or from the side: the artist's angle, and thus that of the viewer, is always at ninety degrees to the subject. [...] At times the picture as a whole is recognizable, at others the fragment is framed in such a way that the subject dissolves, as it were, in an abstraction of lines, planes and infinite shades of grey. In [...] 'Amsterdam' a series of ten prints are made using various techniques, the sharpy framed details of the city provide a subtle picture of the characteristic identity of the whole."
Olivier Julia (1952, France) graduated with a BA in Graphic Art from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Until recently he held a tutoring position in graphic art at the same academy besides practicing as an independent artist. Since his retirement from the academy he works as a full-time visual artist.
Originally his work consists of sober graphic art and monumental drawings, but in more recent years he has explored the dimensional possibilities of graphic art. He creates three-dimensional objects from wood, often painted in subdued colours that are characteristic of his earlier work: differentiated shades of grey and deep blacks. The work of Olivier Julia is focussed on the subtle interaction of closed versus open, of vertical versus horizontal and of light versus dark.
His work is exhibited internationally and is part of many renowned corporate and public collections such as ING, KPN, TNT Post, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Vaasa Museum Finland, Royal Library of Brussels, the Wilploo Collection and the MAL Collection. Furthermore his work is part of numerous private collections around the world including Europe, the USA and South America. His work was selected for the main Dutch abstract-geometric and constructivist art exhibition Symposion 2015.

World of Watermelons
By Valton Tyler
Located in Dallas, TX
In The New York Times Arts in America column, Edward M. Gomez wrote of Valton Tyler, "visionary seems the right word for describing his vivid, unusual and technically refined paintings, prints and drawings, whose style defies convenient labels. Abstract, surreal, cartoonish, sci-fi fantastic, metaphysical, apocalyptic-Baroque - all of these fit but also fall short of fully describing his art." (The Living Arts, June 13, 2000, p. B2)
Valton Tyler was born in 1944 in Texas, where "the industrial world of oil refineries made a long-lasting impression on Valton as a very young child living in Texas City. He was three years old when the terrible explosion occurred there and can remember the terrifying confusion and 'the beautiful red sky and objects flying everywhere in the air.'" (Reynolds, p. 25) While growing up in Texas City, Valton's father worked in auto repair, and was known for his skill in mixing colors for paint jobs. After leaving Texas City, Valton made his way to Dallas, where he briefly enrolled at the Dallas Art Institute, but found it to be too social and commercial for his taste. After Valton's work was introduced to Donald Vogel (founder of Valley House Gallery), "Vogel arranged for Tyler to use the printmaking facilities in the art department of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where the young artist essentially taught himself several demanding printmaking techniques. 'It was remarkable,' Vogel says. 'Not only did he learn complicated etching methods, but he was able to express himself powerfully in whatever medium he explored.' Vogel became the publisher of Tyler's prints. Among them, the artist made editions of some 50 different images whose sometimes stringy abstract forms and more solid, architecturally arresting elements became the precursors of his later, mature style." (Gomez, Raw Vision #35, p. 36)
“World of Watermelons” is plate number 19, and is reproduced in "The First Fifty Prints: Valton Tyler" with text by Rebecca Reynolds, published for Valley House Gallery by Southern Methodist University Press, Dallas, Texas, 1972.
Of “World of Watermelons”, Tyler said “The title here does not represent my own associations with this print. Friends simply began referring to it as ‘the watermelon print...
