Walter Valentini, La Citta Ideale embossing intaglio lithograph. This elegant print features abstract architecture elements in black, gray, and metallic ink. Signed in pencil (or ink) to lower right. it is not numbered. Walter Valentini ( Pergola , October 22, 1928 ) is an Italian painter , sculptor and engraver , internationally recognized in the field of graphics and engraving. He is a master of techniques such as etching, aquatint, drypoint, multi-colored lithography, and chalcography. Born in Pergola , a small town in the Marches in the province of Pesaro and Urbino , October 22, 1928. Son of a leather merchant, He studied graphics at the Convitto School, first in Rome and then in Milan. His teacher Luigi Veronesi, a painter, will introduce him to the geometric abstractionism of Russian constructivists ( El Lissitzky , Tatlin , Moholy-Nagy ), Albe Steiner, graphic designer, Mexican woodcut expert, and Max Huber , advertising graphics, influenced by research of Max Bill, the Swiss precursor of concrete art. In 1946 he passed a competition announced by the Public Administration, reserved for "former partisans , fighters, war orphans and veterans from concentration camps". This will allow him to In 1950 he moved to Urbino to enroll at the Institute of Fine Arts of the Marches , who will attend until 1955 and where he will learn lithographic and calcographic techniques, which he will also use for the illustration of books. Carlo Ceci, his lithography teacher, will bring him closer to both the music and the early spatial works of Lucio Fontana and to the abstract canvases by Emilio Scanavino. In 1955 he moved to Milan , where he managed to find work in the field of advertising . Become creative manager of the Radar agency of Gianluigi Botter . In 1965 he left the Radar agency and was hired by the SPN Line ( Eni's advertising agency) where he will work until 1968. Important work will be done to give a new image to Agip and its sales points. As an artist he established himself in the eighties with a series of abstract sculpture works on wood and paper, all characterized by a precise sense of geometry, proportions and rhythm. Valentini's geometric imagery is influenced by the influences of the Russian avant-gardes of the twentieth century (Constructivism) and, marginally, of the architectures painted by Giorgio de Chirico in the metaphysical period, but is mainly based on the sense of harmony and proportion investigated by Italian artists of the fifteenth century: Leon Battista Alberti, Piero della Francesca and Luca Pacioli are treated on the perspective and on the golden rule that will guide all Valentini's research on space, shapes and their balance. He declares his admiration for the works of Paul Klee , Fausto Melotti and Osvaldo Licini, cultivating the friendship of artists such as Luigi Veronesi , Emilio Scanavino and Hans Richter. He teaches the art of engraving at the "New Academy of Fine Arts" of Milan, of which he was also director, from 1983 to 1985. His graphic works are not smooth surfaces: with a refined dry chalcography technique , Valentini presses the paper so that the drawing remains in relief with respect to the plane. The subjects of these incisions are the same as the tables, only the technique varies: from the aquatint to the etching to the drypoint. The choice of paper is fundamental: the first graphic works are realized on Magnani paper by Pescia and on Fabriano paper, then we move on to the Duchene paper. The "Ljubljana paper", on the other hand, is a wrinkled paper, made up of several layers of wool fibers, which was originally used in Ljubljana as a filter for cigarettes. It is Valentini's idea to use this crumpled paper as a support for some drawings. In 1974 his first exhibition in Milan was held at the Galleria Vinciana. In 1977 he exhibited at the Galleria Vinciana Grigie Images , with the presentation of Guido Ballo . 1982 - Graphics: first prize at Listowel international biennial; 1984 - Graphics: Grand Prix at the Krakow International Biennial; 1990 - Installations: Greenwich, Connecticut (USA), Ashford Properties; 1990 - Installations: Siegburg (Germany), in the Stadtmuseum; 1991 - Installations: Aspen , Colorado (USA), in the Harris Concert Hall; 1992 - Artist books: exhibition at the MoMA in New York ; 1995-1996 - Retrospective in Paris , at the Galerie Dionne; 1999-2000 - Artist books: traveling exhibition in museums in Washington , Chicago and Vancouver In the field of graphics he obtained the first prize at the Listowel International Biennial (in 1982) and the Grand Prix at the International Biennial of Krakow (in 1984). Valentini's sculptures are mostly in bronze, partly polished and partly patinated, or columns in refractory terracotta. Valentini creates art books, volumes with limited circulation, of high artistic value, on very precious paper, handmade. The texts are composed with the typographic method "monotype" (print characters specially designed for the book and then cast in lead). The pages, bound by hand, are accompanied by etchings. An important collection is also present in its city of origin, in the "Museum of the Golden Bronzes and the City of Pergola". In 2013 he won the First Prize XXVIII International Graphic "Do Forni" organized in collaboration with the Civic Museums of Venice Foundation.
