About the Item

A whimsical vintage print by George Ernest Studdy, featuring a lively puppy lunging eagerly at its reflection in a mirror. Paired with the humorous caption, “If you see a good thing, go for it!”, the illustration captures Studdy’s trademark blend of playful wit and warm humor. Rendered with expressive linework and a lighthearted spirit, the piece exemplifies early 20th-century cartoon illustration and reflects Studdy’s celebrated ability to infuse everyday situations with charm and comic vitality. Best known as the creator of Bonzo the Dog, Studdy brought anthropomorphic warmth and humor to popular culture, his works appearing widely in magazines, prints, and commercial art from the 1920s onward. (see listing) About the artist George Ernest Studdy (1878–1948) was a British illustrator and comic strip artist, best known for creating Bonzo the Dog, one of the first internationally recognized cartoon canine characters. After studying at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the Calderon School of Animal Painting in London, Studdy began producing illustrations for The Sketch and other popular magazines around 1912. In 1922, Bonzo debuted in The Sketch and rapidly became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring toys, figurines, and merchandise. Studdy’s humorous, often satirical depictions of Bonzo reflected the interwar appetite for lighthearted escapism and remain enduring examples of early 20th-century popular illustration.
