About the Item

A playful vintage print by George Ernest Studdy, depicting a startled puppy pursued by a buzzing bee. Beneath the scene, the humorous motto reads: “When you are on a good thing, stick to it!”, underscoring the lighthearted wit that characterizes Studdy’s work. With lively linework and an animated sense of motion, the piece captures the mischievous charm that made his illustrations so popular. I added the matching picture. (see listing) About the artist George Ernest Studdy (1878–1948) was a British illustrator and comic strip artist, best remembered for creating Bonzo the Dog, one of the earliest internationally celebrated cartoon animals. After training at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the Calderon School of Animal Painting, Studdy began contributing illustrations to The Sketch and other periodicals in the 1910s. Bonzo’s debut in 1922 brought him widespread fame, leading to books, postcards, toys, and commercial merchandise. His prints remain enduring examples of early 20th-century popular illustration, combining humor, warmth, and anthropomorphic storytelling.
