About the Item

Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990) Barking Dog from ICONS, 1990 Silkscreen with embossing 21 x 25 in. unframed 31 x 35 in. framed Edition of 250 Provenance Martin Lawrence Galleries Private Collection, TX Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist whose bold visual language became an unmistakable part of the 1980s New York art scene. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and raised in nearby Kutztown, he studied briefly at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before moving to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts. Immersed in the city’s subways, clubs, and activist circles, Haring developed a practice that fused street culture, graphic immediacy, and social engagement. His early chalk drawings in subway stations rapidly earned him recognition, leading to major exhibitions, public murals, and global visibility. Haring’s style is defined by its graphic clarity, rhythmic linework, and universal symbolism. His imagery—radiant babies, barking dogs, dancing figures—emerges from thick black outlines and flat, high-contrast fields of color. While deceptively simple, these forms carry potent layers of meaning, addressing themes such as joy, community, sexuality, and social justice. Haring’s approach bridges the gap between fine art and popular culture, embracing accessibility while maintaining a strong conceptual and political core. The artwork shown here features one of Haring’s iconic dog motifs, presented in stark black-and-white against a striking red background. The figure’s bold contour and dynamic, angular posture give it an urgent, almost vibrating presence, typical of Haring’s energetic line. The simplicity of the form—no shading, no interior detail—creates an instantly recognizable silhouette that functions like a symbol or glyph. True to Haring’s visual vocabulary, the piece radiates immediacy and playfulness while also reflecting the artist’s belief in the power of images to communicate directly and universally.
