About the Item

Antique Japanese Woodblock Print- Wading Bird in Flight Page from the 1881 book "Album of 100 Birds" depicting a snipe flying through the air by Kōno Bairei (Japanese b. 1844 d. 1895.) The bird has its feet stretched behind it as it takes flight from the marshy area shown in the bottom of the print. Long horizontal lines given the impression of water below the bird, while leafy plant matter spills in from the right edge of the print. Both the bird and the plant are simply but effectively rendered, through a mix of line work and ink tinting. Frame size: 16.75" H x 12.75" W Image size: 8.25" x 6" W Kōno Bairei was a Japanese artist active during the second half of the 19th century. He was known for his painting and book illustrations, particularly his bird and flower paintings. In 1851, he studied with Nakajima Raisho, a painter of the Maruyama school. The Maruyama school often synthesized western realism with traditional Japanese painting techniques, evidenced in Bairei's work. He later studied with a master of the Shijo school, Shiokawa Bunrin. In 1880, Bairei founded an art school where he taught prominent artist such as Takeuchi Seihō, Kawai Gyokudō, and Uemura Shōen.
