About the artist. Creator of large scale public sculpture, Marvin Oliver, living in Seattle, Washington, works primarily in cast glass with the thought of extending its "realm of possibility. Some of his works are huge such as the whale sculpture he made for the Seattle Children's Hospital, which spans 26 feet and weighs about 12,000 lb. It hangs 11 feet off the ground. Another piece, Spirit of the Future, depicts an abalone with a fin 7 feet high. He credits his interest in large-scale sculptor to Bob Haozous, whose work he saw in St. Louis. However, Marvin Oliver does not work exclusively in large-scale pieces as he also does smaller works that are vessels and masks. In many of his pieces, he draws on his Indian heritage of spirit figures, ravens and other figures that are generic but often abstracted by him and not specific to any tribe. Marvin Oliver was born in Seattle to parents who were elementary and college teachers. He was raised in the Bay Area of San Francisco, and spent many summers in Washington state where his father was a member of the Quinault Indian tribe, and in the Southwest, where his mother was a member of the Isleto Pueblo. In 1964 he went to San Francisco where he studied painting and drawing and lithography. Bill Holm, a professor at the University of Washington and friend of his father's, suggested he go to the University of Washington, which he did and designed his own course---a Master's Degree in Northwest coastal art. His teachers were Holm, Erna Gunther and Jacob Lawrence. In 1973, he earned his Master's Degree, and the next year designed his first public commissioned piece, which was a silkscreen banner with a killer whale and an eagle. In 1974, he also joined the University's faculty, and remained there teaching Northwest Coast arts, graphics, and wood design.The Work of this noted artist is held in many public and private collections as well as numerous museums.
