About the Item
The Lion of Venice, representing Mark the Evangelist, is a winged lion, is an aspect of the Tetramorph. On the pinnacle of St Mark's Cathedral he is depicted as holding a Bible, and surmounting a golden lion which is the symbol of the city of Venice and formerly of the Venetian Republic. This print is an etching and aquatint made on a copper plate. Firstly inked in a deep red , the plate is then surface rolled in gold. It is printed on Somerset Velvet, a heavyweight 300 gsm handmade paper from St Cuthbert's Mill in Somerset.
The print is in a limited edition of 75 and signed by the artist.
The image size is 8.5 x 11 cm on a paper size is 18 x 20 cm.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Tim Southall studied Fine Art at Northumbria University and then printmaking Royal College of Art and l’école des beaux art, Paris. Based in London for twenty years, he now splits his time between London and his house and studio in Cadiz Province, southern Spain.
The base upon which he builds his work is metaphysics: existence, objects and their properties, space and time, cause and effect, and possibility. Using these guides, he express's how he see's and experiences the world. This he does mostly through the use of narrative within a landscape using either the human or animal form to create a narrative. He strives to make work which is delicate and shows a lightness of touch along with an eye for detail. He also uses the language of drawing and mark-making in an attempt to describe emotional depth and atmosphere.

This piece is inspired by William Blake's poem 'TheTyger'. I design the image in my sketchbook and then transfer it to lino, which I hand-carve. Each print is handprinted in my studio using a roller press. As each print is individually handprinted, there may be slight variations in tone and colour. This print is made using gold oil-based ink as a background and then printed over with the tiger in dark purple ink. Each print has the title, edition number and my signature hand-written beneath the image.
