Red Horse on Orange, Three Geishas is an original, hand drawn lithograph by the renowned Chinese born artist Walasse Ting (DING XIONGQUAN, Chinese, 1929-2010) printed using hand lithography techniques on archival Somerset printmaking paper, 100% acid free. Walasse Ting's use of bold colors and expressive calligraphic brush drawn forms convey vivid life energy. He is well known for his colorful images of women, flowers, fish, parrots and horses and was associated with artists Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Pierre Alechinsky, members of the avant-garde group called COBRA. Throughout his artistic life, Ting imbued his passion and spirit into his paintings, poetry and sculpture. Red Horse on Orange, Three Geishas is a freely expressed Chinese Ink Brush depiction of a colorful red horse with a dark violet mane standing beside three Asian women; two holding colorful parrots, the other demurely bearing a decorative fan near her face. This splendid scene exemplifies Ting's love of nature and color with its combination of bright yellow orange, deep red, florescent yellow, lime green, teal blue green, royal blue and hot pink.

About the Artist - Walasse Ting was born in Shanghai, China in 1929. In 1953 Walasse moved to Paris where he met contemporary artists such as Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and Karel Appel. While in Paris he also became affiliated with the artistic group COBRA, which was formed by Appel, Jorn and others to promote the avant-garde art movement. In 1963 he left Paris and resettled in New York City, and there he met other artists such as Sam Francis, Tom Wesselman and Claes Oldenberg. During the 1960s, Walasse's style developed from one of expressionism to pop-art, often depicting nude women painted in bright, vibrant color schemes. In 1970 Walasse won the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for drawing.
He shared a studio with Vivian Springford, and they had a clear influence on each other’s work.
He is the author of thirteen books, including All in My Head (1974), and his most celebrated work, One Cent Life (1964), which contains 62 original lithographs made by 28 European and American artists, with 62 poems by Walasse Ting set in multi-colored inks. The 172-page collection was written by Walasse Ting and edited by Sam Francis. Among the more notable lithographs in the book include work by Walasse Ting, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Joan Mitchell, and Andy Warhol. The book is considered a visual manifesto of 1960s culture.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ting divided his time between Amsterdam and New York. After a long struggle with a brain injury, Walasse Ting died in NewYork in 2010.
His work can be found in permanent international collections such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Modern Museum in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

Walasse Ting
Walasse Ting was a Chinese-American visual artist and poet. His colorful paintings have attracted critical admiration and a popular following. Common subjects include nude women and cats, birds and other animals.
Ting was born in Shanghai in 1929. He left China in 1946 and lived for a while in Hong Kong, then settled in Paris in 1952. There, he associated with artists such as Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Pierre Alechinsky, members of the avant-garde group, CoBrA.
In 1957, Ting moved to the United States, and settled in New York, where his work was influenced by Pop art and Abstract Expressionism. He began primarily as an abstract artist, but the bulk of his work since the mid-1970s has been described as popular "figuratism," with broad areas of color painted with a Chinese brush and acrylic paint. He lived in Amsterdam in the 1990s, but regularly moved between there and New York.
Ting is the author of 13 books, including All in My Head (Walasse Ting Roland Topor, 1974) and One Cent Life (E.W Kornfeld, 1964), a portfolio of 62 original lithographs by 28 artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Kiki Kogelnik, Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis.
Ting won the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for drawing in 1970. His works can be found in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Tate Modern, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, among others. He was sometimes referred to by his Chinese name "丁雄泉" or its various romanizations: Ding Xiongquan or Ting Hsiung-ch'uan.
