About the Item

Amazing print on paper by the artist William J. Shayer, engraved by J. Harris, created in 1864, belonging to the Realist movement, entitled “Full Cry”. The work depicts a typical Victorian-era English hunt, with several riders advancing briskly across the countryside, dressed in the red jackets customary for this activity. “Full cry” refers to the moment of greatest intensity and energy in an activity, in this case, hunting. The engraving shows an open landscape, the movement of the horses, and the balanced, academic composition characteristic of Shayer's work. Harris's transfer to paper maintains the structure and essence of the scene. It features a fine wood frame with mother-of-pearl inlay. This work is a canonical example of English realism applied to hunting scenes, highly valued at the time both for their sporting content and their documentary value regarding daily life.
