About the Item
Contrex is a circa 1970 French advertisement for Contrex Mineral Water by Bernard Villemot (1909-1989). The advertisement continues Villemot’s signature use of nude beauties in his advertising artwork. The image features a nude woman happily wrapped around a bottle of Contrex in a bedroom. Contrex mineral water has diuretic properties and was advertised towards women as a way to keep in shape. The text reads “Trust Contrex with a reasonable meal” and implies that the drink is great pairing with any meal.
Bernard Villemot (1911-1989) was one of the foremost poster artists in the 1960’s and 1970’s, known for his innovative design and use of color. Born into a bourgeoisie family, his artistic pursuit was encouraged by his father, who was a well-known cartoonist. Villemot received training at the famous L’Ecole Paul, a school for poster artists founded and taught by famed poster artist Paul Colin. To many, he represents the end of the age when most of the poster designers are trained artists. As the world began to shift in the 1960s towards ad agencies and graphic design implemented by art departments, Villemot stood firm in his belief that the only way to advertise effectively “was to treat a poster as though it were a painting”. His distinctive style was commissioned by many prominent advertisers, most notably Orangina, Perrier, and Bally.

Bernard Villemot
Villemot, one of the leading graphic designers in France during the post-war period, is regarded as one of France's most talented twentieth-century poster artists. He was the subject of retrospective exhibitions at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris between 1980 and 2000. Belonging to the movement that moved towards an international graphic style after the Bauhaus and de Stijl, Villemot's advertising clients included Air France, Perrier, Orangina, and Bergasol. His work is characterized by vivid colors, thin outlines, and abstract and organic forms.
