About the Item

Dario Villalba (Spanish, 1939–2018) was a pioneering figure in postwar Spanish art, known for his innovative fusion of photography and painting. His practice blurred the boundaries between mediums, transforming photographic images into emotional and conceptual pictorial compositions. This Triptych is a lithographic print on paper, created by the artist using his signature approach that bridges figuration and abstraction through experimental techniques. The work exemplifies Villalba’s unique visual language—expressive, psychological, and deeply human. Villalba gained international recognition after presenting his iconic Encapsulados at the 35th Venice Biennale (1970), a series that established his reputation as a leading conceptual artist. He was awarded the International Painting Prize at the 12th São Paulo Biennale (1973), and later received Spain’s Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2002) and the National Fine Arts Award (2003). His work is held in major museum collections, including the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and numerous international institutions.
