About the Item
In the Post World War ll era, Howard Hughes, the owner of TWA was a dominant force in expanding and promoting the routes flown by his company. As the economy was vastly improving, airline travel for business and pleasure was on the upswing and posters such as this were instrumental in promoting this form of travel. This Africa poster was created by the gifted American artist David Klein (1918 -2005), and depicts a group of zebras as the main figures in a very geometric style. The black and white of the animals contrast perfectly with the bright reds and oranges of the background; thus giving the poster a very harmonized composition.
Klein was best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he produced illustrations for Broadway theatrical productions, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and numerous corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950's and 1960's.

David Klein
David Klein was an immensely prolific travel posterist who worked primarily for TWA and produced dozens of posters for the now-defunct global carrier. He designed several different series for TWA, ranging from early work that was realistic to later work that was cartoon-like in style. David Klein was born in El Paso, Texas in February of 1918. He moved to California where he attended the Art Center School [later renamed the Art Center College of Design] in Los Angeles. During the 1930s, he was an active member of the California Watercolor Society. This group of artists often chose to paint watercolors depicting scenes of everyday life in the cities and suburbs of California. They painted directly with little or no preliminary pencil drawings and used paper as a ‘color’ in a new and creative way.

Circa 1960 original travel poster by David Klein for Trans World Airlines TWA
By David Klein
Located in PARIS, FR
Step into a vivid dream of Iberian flair with this striking circa 1960 original travel poster by David Klein, created for Trans World Airlines (TWA). Designed at the height of the Jet Age, this artwork invites viewers to fly across the Atlantic and immerse themselves in the timeless traditions and spectacle of Spain.
Rendered in Klein’s unmistakable style—bold, graphic, and saturated with color—the poster is anchored by the imposing figure of a matador, resplendent in an elaborately embroidered traje de luces (suit of lights). His stoic expression, the gleaming detail of his costume, and the dramatic composition place the viewer right on the threshold of the bullring. In the background, another matador stands poised beneath the arches of a sunlit plaza de toros, while a stylized jetliner leaves a clean, modern contrail in the crimson sky above—signaling the future soaring above the heritage of the past.
With its juxtaposition of tradition and modernity, this poster captures both the romance of Old Spain and the excitement of international travel in the mid-20th century. The golden Gothic script of “Spain” contrasts with the jet-age boldness of the “Fly TWA” lettering, creating a visual rhythm that reflects the era’s enthusiasm for cultural discovery through air travel.
