About the Item

'Superman's 80th Birthday' by DJ Leon, 2020. Digital print on canvas paper, 37 x 25.5 inches. Having made his first appearance in Action Comics in 1938, this 3D Backlit print celebrates and reflects on the 80th Birthday of Superman that took place in 2018. The work combines, appropriates, and then transforms images and text found from the internet into a 3D backlit print. Embedded LEDs are placed behind the print to reveal three-dimensional images that move as the viewer moves from side to side. DJ Leon uses a combination of collage, photography, and text to make complex compositions on diverse subjects, from Superheroes, to pop culture, to art history. Each thematic work is an assemblage of crudely cut, found images sourced from Internet browsing, with photographs, proprietary images, and both related and free-associative text. Born in 1948, DJ Leon graduated from Boston University and spent 38 years on Wall Street before devoting his time exclusively to the photo-based practice in 2009. Although not formally trained, Leon is a longtime avid photography enthusiast and art collector. Over the past decade, his artistic practice developed into multiple forms, from making images with a camera, to combining images into collages, and then altering them into 3D and Lenticular prints. Since 2012, Leon has exhibited his work throughout the United States as well as internationally. Recent exhibitions have included American Embassy, Ankara, Turkey, Madelyn Jordon Fine Art, Scarsdale, NY, Lawrence Cantor Gallery, Los Angeles, Scope Art Fair, Miami, and New York. His work is included in the Superman Museum, in Metropolis, Illinois, as well as in private and corporate collections across the United States. Leon’s beach and lifestyle photography, a separate and distinct body of work, has also gained significant recognition and has been exhibited nationally including at Surf Lodge, Montauk, and Market Art Fair, Bridgehampton.

Post War Hero - Original Pop Painting on Architectural Paper
By Gary John
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles street artist Gary John exploded onto the international art scene first during Art Basel Miami in 2013. John’s playfully bold work quickly gained attention and he was named one of 20 standout artists at the 2014 NY Affordable Art Fair. His contemporary artworks continue to be exhibited at major international art fairs in the United States, Asia and Europe, including Los Angeles, New York, London, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Celebrities and major art collectors worldwide have acquired his timeless artworks, which have seen a significant increase in value. John applied bold acrylic paint, oil pastels, and mixed media onto architectural paper to create this original artwork measuring 42 inches high by 30 inches wide. This mixed media painting is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner using the first two letters of his first and last name (GA JO). Convenient local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Gary John has been a street artist since 1985. Originally from Seattle, Washington, he moved to Venice Beach, Los Angeles in 2003 and began selling on the Venice boardwalk. After almost 10 years on the boardwalk and experiencing “a bout with homelessness,” he was discovered and his artistic career took off with great success. He references this success in every artwork he makes. Along the left side of the artwork he paints a series of circles joined together by an arrow pointing up. Each circle represents a stepping stone on the path of success that keeps growing to greater heights. On the right side he depicts a line of houses, expressing the joy he finds in the stability of a home. His street artworks have a whimsical yet exciting and bold quality, inspired by classic cartoon...
