About the Item

Etching on laid paper. Signed and dated in plate upper left: Appian 1867. Published by Cadart Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Une mare (Environs de Roussillon), Adolphe Appian evokes the tranquil poetry of a rural pond framed by trees and reeds. The composition centers on a still pool of water reflecting the surrounding vegetation, with a heron poised elegantly in the foreground. Appian’s fine etching line and nuanced tonal gradations capture the quiet mystery of nature — a moment suspended between realism and reverie. Executed in 1867, this work exemplifies Appian’s mature mastery of the etched medium. His use of subtle cross-hatching and velvety shadow modulations produces a depth and atmosphere reminiscent of the Barbizon painters, yet distinct in its delicacy and restraint. The sense of solitude and balance between land, water, and air reveals Appian’s deep sensitivity to the landscape of southeastern France, especially around Lyon and Roussillon, where he often worked. Excellent impression on laid paper, with wide margins. Light surface tone and occasional foxing in outer margin; image pristine. Adolphe Appian (born Jacques Barthélemy Appian) was among the foremost French etchers of the 19th century, known for his lyrical landscapes and refined tonal technique. A friend of Corot and Daubigny, he was instrumental in bridging the naturalism of the Barbizon School with the atmospheric subtlety that later influenced Whistler and the Impressionists. Une mare (Environs de Roussillon), published by the Société des Aquafortistes, embodies his meditative approach to nature — a serene and timeless dialogue between light, reflection, and solitude.
