In Siège de la Société des Aqua-Fortistes (“Headquarters of the Society of Etchers”), Adolphe Martial-Potémontpresents a remarkable document of Parisian artistic life during the Second Empire. The scene depicts the bustling façade of Cadart
Luquet’s publishing house at 79 Rue Richelieu, the historic seat of the Société des Aquafortistes. Well-dressed Parisians crowd the shop windows, examining the latest prints, while others stroll past in conversation — a vivid testimony to the renewed cultural enthusiasm for original etching in mid-19th-century France.
Executed with Martial-Potémont’s characteristic precision and sense of urban vitality, the etching captures not only the architectural details of the publisher’s building but also the lively interplay of figures, reflections, and textures. His treatment of light through etched line and hatching imbues the composition with both realism and charm, transforming a simple city street into a symbol of artistic modernity and civic pride.
Superb, richly inked impression with full margins; very light foxing and toning consistent with age.
A student of Isabey and Corot, Adolphe Martial-Potémont was one of the principal chroniclers of 19th-century Parisian life through etching. As a founding member of the Société des Aquafortistes, he contributed significantly to the movement that sought to re-establish etching as a collector’s art. Siège de la Société des Aqua-Fortistes serves not only as an architectural view but also as a celebration of the very institution that sustained the etching revival — a masterwork of both historical and artistic importance.

Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868). He was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he suffered from color blindness. Although now little-known in the English-speaking world, he is generally recognized as the most significant etcher of 19th century France. His most famous works by him are a series of views powerfully conveying his distinctive Gothic vision of Paris. He also suffered from mental illness, dying in an asylum. Meryon had sketched in Athens, Algiers and other exotic places he had visited, and by late 1840 decided to take lessons in drawing from the Toulon...
