About the Publication: Lettre a mon peintre Raoul Dufy (Paris: Librairie academique Perrin et Cie, 1965) is a distinguished folio honoring Raoul Dufy (1877–1953), printed on July 22, 1965, by Mourlot Freres, Paris. Conceived as a refined homage to Dufy’s lyrical modernism, the folio comprises twenty-seven lithographs on velin Arjomari paper, executed d’apres Dufy and his contemporaries—including Jacques Villon, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Marcel Gromaire, Bernard Buffet, Charles Lapicque, Andre Marchand, and Jean Lurcat—thereby situating Dufy within the broader lineage of twentieth-century French art. The project reflects both the technical mastery of Mourlot’s atelier and the mid-century Parisian ideal of merging painterly tribute with fine-print craftsmanship, affirming Dufy’s enduring influence on modern visual culture. About the Artist: Andre Marchand (1907–1997) was a visionary French painter and printmaker celebrated for his lyrical balance between figuration and abstraction, his refined use of color, and his meditative engagement with nature and spirituality. Born in Aix-en-Provence, the same region that inspired Paul Cezanne, Marchand inherited a reverence for light, landscape, and the rhythmic harmony of natural forms, which he transformed into a personal visual language of poetic modernism. Deeply influenced by the great innovators of the 20th century—Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—Marchand absorbed the radical advances of Cubism, Surrealism, and abstraction, fusing them with a distinctly humanistic sensibility rooted in emotion, clarity, and restraint. By the 1930s, he had become a prominent figure in the Ecole de Paris alongside Jean Bazaine, Maurice Esteve, and Alfred Manessier, developing an art that combined the structural discipline of Cezanne with the fluid lyricism of Miro and the chromatic spirituality of Kandinsky. In the aftermath of World War II, Marchand’s work—landscapes, still lifes, and contemplative figures—embodied the renewal of French art, expressing serenity, balance, and transcendence in a time of reconstruction. His paintings radiated musicality and grace, marked by translucent tones and deliberate lines that conveyed both strength and introspection. Marchand’s influence extended to younger artists such as Zao Wou-Ki, Pierre Soulages, and Nicolas de Stael, who admired his synthesis of formal rigor and expressive depth. His mastery extended to printmaking and illustration, where he achieved the same meditative harmony found in his paintings. Represented in major institutions including the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris and the Centre Pompidou, Marchand remains revered as a bridge between classical order and modern freedom, a painter whose vision united discipline with lyricism and intellect with emotion. The highest auction record for Andre Marchand was achieved when Nu Assis sold for $46,000 USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on June 4, 2008, affirming his legacy as one of the most eloquent and spiritually resonant artists of 20th-century France.
