About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Antoine Pevsner (1886–1962), titled Tete de femme (Head of a Woman), from the album XXe siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXIe Annee, No. 12, Mai-Juin 1959, originates from the 1959 edition published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. Tete de femme reflects Pevsner’s synthesis of geometric structure and lyrical abstraction, merging his Constructivist principles with a refined, architectural sense of rhythm and movement. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Antoine Pevsner (1886–1962) was a Russian-born French sculptor, theorist, and pioneer of Constructivism whose groundbreaking fusion of art, science, and technology transformed the course of modern sculpture. A visionary innovator, Pevsner gave physical form to invisible forces—light, energy, and motion—by employing industrial materials such as bronze, copper, brass, and Perspex to create open, dynamic structures that seem to pulse with rhythmic precision and harmony. Born in Oryol, Russia, and trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, he was deeply influenced by Kazimir Malevich and Vladimir Tatlin before co-authoring the Realistic Manifesto (1920) with his brother Naum Gabo, a revolutionary text that declared space and time as the true foundations of art. Rejecting traditional notions of mass and volume, Pevsner embraced geometry, transparency, and rhythm to express the invisible order of the universe. After settling in Paris in 1923, he became a leading figure of the European avant-garde, moving among peers such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. From Picasso, he drew the courage to reinvent form; from Kandinsky, the belief in spiritual abstraction; from Calder, the poetic balance of motion and space; and from Duchamp and Man Ray, the integration of intellect and concept into visual art. His sculptures, including Construction in Space (1923), Projet pour une fontaine (1937), and Torse (Torso) (1956), exemplify his ability to merge scientific precision with lyrical expression, resulting in works that appear simultaneously mechanical and organic, rational and emotional. Pevsner’s emphasis on structure, light, and transparency anticipated movements such as Kinetic Art, Op Art, and Minimalism, and his exploration of line and motion profoundly influenced later artists including Jesus Rafael Soto, Jean Tinguely, Richard Serra, Anthony Caro, and Anish Kapoor. He represented France at the 1955 Venice Biennale, where critics hailed his work as “frozen music,” a perfect balance of order and vitality that bridged art and mathematics. Today, Pevsner’s sculptures are held in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Guggenheim Museum (New York). Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Antoine Pevsner remains a towering figure of 20th-century modernism—a sculptor-philosopher who transformed metal into light and geometry into poetry. His highest auction record was achieved by Torse (Torso) (circa 1956), which sold for $1.15 million USD at Sotheby’s, New York, on November 7, 2012, reaffirming his enduring legacy as one of the most visionary, intellectually rigorous, and collectible sculptors of modern abstraction.
